2015 Chevy Colorado & Canyon Teased One Last Time

Behold, the next-generation Chevrolet Colorado. Sort of. General Motors has yanked back the sheets on what the company is calling a show truck at the Bangkok International Motor Show. Despite the 'show' label, the mid-sizer is poised to go on sale in Thailand later this year packing a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel engine, though there are no firm details as to what we can expect in terms of either power or efficiency. GM did say that the Colorado won't leave buyers lacking for enough towing capacity, though. Odds are we can expect tricks like the 20-inch wheels and body-color tonneau cover to be nixed as the truck makes its way closer to production.

Still, the vehicle is plenty sharp and looks to have the mechanical guts to give the global Ford Ranger a run for its money. But will GM offer the Colorado we see here in the States? That's a tough question. The automaker has made it clear that the Shreveport, Louisiana plant that manufactures the aging Colorado/GMC Canyon isn't long for this world, though we have heard rumors that the automaker isn't planning on killing the pickup all together. Here's hoping we'll see this truck or something similar in the States sometime soon. Hit the jump for the full press release.

Chevrolet Unveils Colorado Show Truck

Boldly styled show truck previews next-generation midsize pickup

2011-03-21

BANGKOK, Thailand - Chevrolet today revealed the Colorado Show Truck in advance of the Bangkok International Auto Show, where it is making its global public debut. The concept previews the next-generation Colorado midsize pickup truck, which will build on Chevrolet's strong truck DNA and award-winning heritage. The Colorado goes on sale in Thailand later this year.

"Thailand is the world's-largest market for midsize pickups, so this was the perfect location in which to unveil our new Colorado," said Susan Docherty, vice president, GMIO Sales, Marketing and Aftersales. "Trucks have been part of Chevrolet's core for nearly all of its 100-year history. The Colorado reinforces that heritage with expressive design, refinement and uncompromising capability."

The show truck features an extended-cab body atop a high-stance AWD chassis and rides on large, 20-inch wheels and off-road tires. Power comes from an efficient 2.8L turbo-diesel engine, which produces a broad torque band for excellent cargo and towing capability.

"Although this is a show vehicle, the basic proportions and form convey the vision for the next-generation Colorado that we will bring to market," said Brad Merkel, GM's global vehicle line executive. "It reflects a stylized version of the new truck, one that takes into account rugged dependable truck capabilities for commercial use as well as sophisticated refinement for personal-use needs."

While the new Colorado was developed within GM's global product development organization, engineers took careful steps to ensure it would meet local market needs. Roberto Rempel, GM's global vehicle chief engineer, lived in Thailand for several months during the truck's development, immersing himself in the market and observing how the Thai people use their trucks and the road conditions they experience.

"Pickups are instrumental in the vibrant Thai economy and owners take great pride in their trucks, which are used for both work and personal driving," he said. "These customers ask a lot of their trucks, so the powertrains and chassis must be very robust to earn their trust – and that's exactly what we've delivered."

Design details

The Colorado show truck's purposeful design conveys strength through bodywork that appears tightly wrapped over the chassis and a wide, confident stance. In the front, Chevrolet's internationally recognized gold bowtie and dual-port grille are framed by large headlamps that flow into the front fenders, and an extractor vent on the hood.

"Around the globe, pickup trucks are associated with strength, capability and function – and that's exactly what the Colorado show truck embodies," said Ed Welburn, GM vice president of Global Design. "Its broad-shouldered proportions are derived from nearly a century of Chevrolet truck heritage."

Pepperdust Metallic exterior paint is accented with polished aluminum details in the fascias, as well as integrated side steps and black-masked projector-style headlamps with LED lighting elements. At the rear is a full-width LED-lit taillamp, which creates a striking appearance when illuminated.

Additional exterior details include:

A streamlined "cab collar" design with a body-color hard tonneau cover on the bed

Gray accents on the side, front and rear lower moldings

20-inch aluminum wheels featuring a "liquid metal" finish, with Stone Gray color wheel ports

Cooper 285/50R20 ZEON LTZ tires

Outside mirrors with LED turn-signal indicators.

Inside, there's another signature Chevrolet cue: a dual-cockpit instrument panel design. It flows into the doors, with continuous lines that create a floating, wraparound effect, amplifying the Colorado's feeling of spaciousness. Ice-blue lighting and high-quality, "double-faced" leather-trimmed seats add sophistication and refinement.

"The interior is designed to deliver a premium and inviting environment, with a greater feeling of spaciousness than is typically found in midsize trucks," said Welburn. "There's also great attention to detail in the execution of the features you see and feel."

A brace of motorcycle-inspired, three-dimensional gauges stand out on the instrument panel, projecting a sporty appearance.

Contrasting trim used with the light-colored leather seating, dark wood trim accented with chrome and low-gloss and soft-touch materials are used throughout for a premium feel. A number of storage compartments are located throughout the interior, including a covered center bin for concealment of valuable items, and a large, dual glovebox.

Additional features include a dual-zone, digital climate control system and the latest in "infotainment" technology. The show truck highlights an ergonomically positioned 7-inch LCD display in the center stack, for easy viewing and intuitive control of Web access, navigation, music and hands-free phone features.

More details about the production model will be released later in the year. Please visit media.chevrolet.com for the latest updates.

Chevrolet Colorado Show Truck Previews Next-Gen Midsize Pickup

Quote:
A couple of weeks ago, we brought you a teaser image for the next-gen Chevrolet Colorado Show Truck ahead of its unveiling at the Bangkok Auto Show. Today, Chevy has pulled the sheet off the truck, revealing a modern, forward-looking concept for what will be the brand's next global midsize pickup.

Judging by your comments on that preview image, the truck will stir some controversy with its styling, as many of the best--and worst--designs do. Chevy's global vehicle line executive Brad Merkel says of the design, "Although this is a show vehicle, the basic proportions convey the vision for the next-generation Colorado that we will bring to market."

The concept Colorado features a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine, 20-inch wheels and all-wheel drive. Don't expect the diesel here in the U.S.--a range of gasoline engines is far more likely.

Inside, the show truck gets motorcycle-inspired three-dimensional gauges light-colored leather, contrasting trim and dark wood accents, plus a host of low-gloss, soft-touch materials for a "premium feel." Whether this is pure show-truck frippery or a preview of a high-end model is unclear.

Full details on the production version--for Thailand at least--will be available later this year ahead of the first sales of the truck in Thailand.

Video: Watch the elaborate unveiling of Chevy's next-gen Colorado in Bangkok

Quote:
The next-generation Chevrolet Colorado pickup will be available for sale in Thailand later this year, and the assembled media at the Bangkok International Motor Show received an early look at what the midsize truck will look like. The unveiled pickup, which General Motors is officially calling a "show truck," features a 2.8-liter diesel engine and very attractive sheetmetal, along with showy (and probably non-production) touches like 20-inch wheels and a stylized body-colored tonneau cover.

While we covered the Colorado's unveiling from afar, we weren't able to see it with our own eyes. That changes now, though, with video of the live event. Hit the jump to watch the wild and crazy unveiling, which includes a pair of trucks scaling the backdrop wall, followed by a light show that reminds us of Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The video is a bit choppy at first (and not of the highest quality), but you can skip ahead to the unveiling at the 4:30 mark, followed by a question and answer session with General Motors management at 8:45. Hat tip to Chermarn!

First Look: Chevrolet Colorado Show Truck

New Working-Class Bowtie Surfaces in Southeast Asia
March 21, 2011 / By Kirill Ougarov |

Ahead of its public debut at the Bangkok Auto Show, General Motors has taken the wraps off of the preview version of its next-generation midsize pickup, which has been (not so) imaginatively dubbed the Chevrolet Colorado Show Truck.

Why Thailand? As it so happens, the southeast Asian country is the number one market for midsize trucks in the world and about 43% of the new cars sold there are trucks.

Technical details on the Show Truck are few. GM has said that under the hood is a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine and that it's equipped with all-wheel drive, which helps to lend it a taller stance. GM currently uses a 2.8-liter diesel inline-four in the Brazilian-market Chevrolet S-10, where it makes roughly 138 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque. It's likely that the Colorado Show Truck is employing a version of this mill.

The extended-cab truck sports the same dual-port grille that's become a signature of Chevrolet's design. In this case, it looks much like that of the Malibu midsize sedan. The truck rides on 20-inch aluminum wheels fitted with off-road tires and its exterior features details such as LED turn-signals in the rear-view mirrors, Pepperdust Metallic paint with aluminum details in the fascias, projector-style headlamps with LED accents, and LED taillamps. GM vice president of global design Ed Welburn says that "its broad-shoulders proportions are derived from nearly a century of Chevrolet truck heritage."

Much time and money was reportedly spent on the interior. It features a dual-cockpit instrument panel that flows into the doors that's highlighted by motorcycle-inspired, three-dimensional gauges in the instrument panel. Other interior details include contrasting trim, chrome accents, and soft-touch materials. There are copious storage compartments throughout the cabin, including a covered center console and dual glovebox. The truck is also equipped with dual-zone climate control and a seven-inch LCD display in the center stack.

As for whether the truck will replace the existing U.S.-market Colorado/Canyon, GM continues to remain silent. However, a GM official we spoke with said that the automaker has no plans to abandon the midsize truck market and that a new version of the truck is on the way. We're betting it will come out looking much like the show truck, with different engine options and a steering wheel on left side, of course.

Whatever it ends up being, it will surely built somewhere in the NAFTA area to avoid the so-called "Chicken Tax" that makes importing trucks from countries like Thailand unprofitable. GM says details for the production model will come later in the year, so stay tuned.

I seriously hope that this STAYS a show truck... God this is awful. Id hope they would go for a smaller silverado style, and keep the 5.3L option and possibly go for a hybrid/flex fuel option.

The ridgeline was a ripoff of the avalanche. Honda even used former GM truck engineers to design it.

other than the headlights i like it. its MILES ahead of the colorado in the looks department. if they squared out the headlights a little more to resemble those on the tahoe it would have a really aggressive look overall.

Chevrolet Colorado Rally Concept looks ready to tackle Dakar, maybe the moon

Chevrolet Colorado Rally Concept – Click above for high-res image gallery

Quote:
The production version of the next-generation Chevrolet Colorado has yet to be revealed, but auto show crowds in Argentina are getting a peek at the possible lines of the upcoming pickup. Chevrolet is picking the Buenos Aires International Motor Show as the stage on which it will show off its new Colorado Rally Concept.

An aggressive and strong style are the immediate visual cues given off by the Rally Concept, which is meant to handle some serious off-road driving. A pair of integrated winches (one up front and one out back) will help should you actually manage to get the Colorado Rally Concept stuck. That ought to prove to be a difficult task, thanks to the 305/60R18 BFGoodrich Mud Terrain tires, long-travel suspension and 2.8-liter diesel engine.

Keeping up the aggression, the interior of the Chevy Colorado Rally Concept is equipped with racing seats and five-point harnesses. The driver or co-driver can adjust tire pressure and suspension settings from the cabin, while either can also enjoy some fresh air from the vents cut into the acrylic side windows.

To say that this truck is built to run off-road is an understatement.

Dear General Motors,

Make this truck. And sell it in the States. Please.

Sincerely,

The sports steering wheel has a flattened curve and a set of LEDs indicating engine speed (the most important indicator for the pilot), allowing you to find the best time to shift gears. It also has four command buttons that alter the central display panel (alternating different information like a computer board), turn on the headlights, the Air Boost (a compressed air system that cleans the air quickly cabin, in situations where the vehicle is in a cloud of dust) and the speed limiter in the urban stretches.

Canyon Carver: Chevrolet Reveals Colorado Rally Concept in Argentina

Quote:
Chevrolet’s South American designers have created this Colorado Rally Concept, a version of the brand’s next-generation mid-size truck penned with desert rallies in mind. It went on display at the Buenos Aires Motor Show in Argentina.

This concept follows the Colorado concept that bowed earlier this year at the Bangkok Auto Show. Both vehicles preview the next-generation Chevrolet Colorado (twinned with the GMC Canyon). These types of midsize trucks sell exceedingly well in South America and parts of southeast Asia, like Thailand, making Buenos Aires and Bangkok the ideal locales for displaying what a future Colorado may look like.

Unlike the previous show truck, the Rally concept is a crew-cab model, but is blessed with four-wheel-drive and a 2.8-liter turbodiesel four-cylinder engine. It rides on 18-inch aluminum wheels wrapped in burly, 12-inch-wide off-road tires, supported by “high-performance” suspension that can be raised or lowered two inches. The windows are made from acrylic plastic and have ventilation holes (it gets hot when rallying through the desert) and all exterior lights use LEDs. The Rally concept also wears an integrated roll bar, tool box, and spare tire carrier mounted in the bed. Both front and rear bumperssport a four-ton electric winch.

Because it’s designed for serious work off-road, you’d expect the cabin to be Spartan. Surprisingly, the Rally concept’s dashboard is finished in textured brown leather, and the sporty bucket seats are covered in orange-stitched neoprene. Concessions to racing include five-point harnesses, toggle switches for changing ride height and activating the fire extinguisher, a navigation system for the co-driver, shift lights (embedded in the steering wheel), and auxiliary gauges.

It’s clear that the Colorado Rally Concept is just a fanciful way for Chevrolet to highlight the upcoming truck’s capabilities; beneath the showy off-road accessories, this is a fairly realistic preview of the next Colorado. What is less clear is whether a next-generation Colorado will arrive on our shores. Chevrolet hasn’t denied the possibility, but for now the next Colorado is only confirmed for other markets like South America and Asia.
