math gurus, need help with trigonometry

ok the book doesn't explain how to break this down...

107º54'+37º49'

i know how to break 90º down, but not 107º

do i just bring down 107º and write 54' over 60 minutes?

thanks!

(107+34 = 144 degrees)+
(54/60 + 49/60 = 1 43/60) = 145 43/60 degrees or 145 degrees and 43 minutes or 8743π/10800 radians.

I separated the whole numbers (degrees) from the fraction part (minutes) to add the mixed number. Much like adding 1 2/3 + 2 2/3 = 3 + 4/3 or 4 1/3.

You're taking college trig, I assume?
Which book are you using, and where are you taking it?

PS: If you use a Ti-83+ or higher it can add in degrees, minutes, and seconds.

180º = 180 + 0/60 + 0/3600
85º36'2" = 85 + 36/60 + 2/3600

I need to turn 2 degrees (in 180) into minutes and seconds (so I have enough of each to work with, I'll turn 1 degree in to 60 minutes and the other into 3600 seconds.)

180º = 178 + 60/60 + 3600/3600
85º36'2" = 85 + 36/60 + 2/3600

Now subtract 178-85 = 93
60/60 - 36/60 = 24/60
3600/3600 - 2/3600 = 3598/3600

Leaving me with: 93º24'3598" which is correct, but not simplified. To simplify I need to find the one degree that's missing.

3598/60 = 59.96666666... Which means 59 more minutes.

But how many seconds am I left with?
Well it's 3598 - (60*59 = 3540) = 58

Leaving me with: 93º(24+59)'58" = 93º83'58" = 94º23'58"
