2004 Mazda RX-8 Ball Joint Recall

NHTSA said Mazda Motor Corp. is recalling 27,800 2004 model-year RX-8 cars as cracks may occur in the ball joint socket due to improper forging of the lower control arm.

Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, DUE TO IMPROPER FORGING OF THE LOWER CONTROL ARM, CRACKS MAY OCCUR IN THE BALL JOINT SOCKET.
Consequence: IN SEVERE DRIVING CONDITIONS, THE BALL MAY SEPARATE FROM THE BALL JOINT SOCKET AND A LOSS OF STEERING MAY OCCUR, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPAIR THESE VEHICLES. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING AUGUST 2005. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT MAZDA AT 1-800-222-5500.

The cool thing is this is a recall because the part may break under severe driving conditions. It's not like it is a weak part, unless it is pushed beyond what would be considered a normal driving limit. I talked with a buddy of mine at the dealer today and he said he has never even heard of one (in the region) breaking.
