I just don't understand why anyone would take the side vent. If they also have a MR2.. why do that to other MR2s?

Believe me, it's Hao's car. In one of the pictures you can see the brown leather in the drivers head rest. Besides nearly everything in his description was on Hao's car with the exception of rebuilding the transmission. I remember a previous owner after Hao sold it had the tranny rebuilt.
