SQ is sound quality
SPL is sound pressure level (sheer volume, and nothing more)
Neither is better, it's just a preference on what you want your setup to do. Me, I'd be happy with a single (primarily SQ oriented) 10 or maybe 12. Some people find the bottom 60-70Hz of the ~18,000Hz range we can hear to be most important, and feel the need for 6 subs in one car. Just a preference, if you ask my SQ is more logical, in that if I'm going to put all the time into building kick panels, boxes, amp racks, etc, I want the entire spectrum to sound great, not be left with unamped mids and 4000 watts of low bass. But then that's just me.
