my speedometer crapped out on me

my speedometer no longer works in my car. It was fine until i hit about 40 mph then it started fluctuating and then my speedometer dropped to 0. My vss is plugged in, and looks to be normal. What should i check ?

What kind of car, and how old is it? If your car is ancient you might have a snapped Speedocable.

is that the only thing that stopped working? any other dashboard lights blinking or acting up?

nope, everything works fine except for the fact that the speedometer sometimes likes to act up. If i leave my cruse control on it's ok, if i turn it off and drive it goes wacky sometimes.

this has happened to be before on my civics. A couple times the metal pins on the speed sensor were really dirty and cleaning them fixed the problem. Another time one of my friends had sheered the speed sensor off while the tranny was out of the car and I just replaced it with another.
