This is azinwood's beginners guide to leeching from irc.
I would suggest going here first to get an intro about what irc is and the basics of the client
http://www.mirc.com/ircintro.html
Next step will be to download a client. If you're using XP the most common client is mIRC.
Downloadable via: http://www.mirc.com/get.html
After downloading and installing, run mirc.exe and you will get a window similar to below:

all boxes are self explanatory. You need to connect to an irc server. After you are connected to an irc server (there are many of them out there) you can enter a channel (which is basically a chat room).
In the chat room you will see bots posting messages about files they can send you by directly connecting to you (think similar to AIM direct connect).
You wil type in the code for the file you want according to the bot and it will send it to you.
There are a few options you may want to tweak out before connecting, esp dcc options which will affect how and what type of file transfers you will accept.

I like to especially allow *.mpg, *.tar, *.rar, *.zip, *.avi, *.mpeg, *.mp3 files these are the most common types that i download.
After your settings are all set you can go back to the first screen and choose what server you want to connect to.

You may ask how do I find the right server? There are many irc search engines out there that keep track of where certain files are being made available. These sites include
i like to use these sites:
www.ircspy.com
www.packetnews.com
by typing in a search term at ircspy.com i get a server address of omega.vipnetw0rk.org for a certain file. this screen lists the server name, the bot serving the file, the channel and the packet number.

I will now connect to this server
http://67.15.4.46/~admin2/irc/6.jpg
After connecting to the server this window will popup where you wil need to enter the channel to join
http://67.15.4.46/~admin2/irc/7.jpg
you are now in the channel
http://67.15.4.46/~admin2/irc/8.jpg
You can chat and enter commands at the bottom of the window. In the main window you will see lots of text go by. There will be chitter chatter between users and then a bot will display the files they are offering.
for example
<[p0wer]-[201]> ** To request a file type: "/msg [p0wer]-[201] xdcc send #x" **
<[p0wer]-[201]> #1 217x [1.3M] 1(XXX1) Courtney Cox : Blue Desert .mpg
<[p0wer]-[201]> #2 296x [698M] 2(XXX2) Girls Gone Wild Endless Spring Break 2003 XXX DVDRip DivX-xDMNx .tar
if i wanted to request the girls gone wild movie, i would need to type
/msg [p0wer]-[201] xdcc send #2
since it is packet 2
http://67.15.4.46/~admin2/irc/9.jpg
after typing the command the bot will come back and confirm my request. If the bot has a free slot to send me the file it wil so if not it will place me in a queque to wait for other download to complete
luckily i was able to get it fairly quickly although the speed is pretty slow.
http://67.15.4.46/~admin2/irc/10.jpg
in 3 hours or less depending on how fast the connection is i will have the movie to watch.
this is of course the most basic tutorial but it will get you started on the path to getting files from irc.
there are lots of servers and channels out there (some private) that hold a wealth of music and programs. the trick is finding a good server and a good channel with lots of stuff. good luck!
