View Full Version : external crossover needed?

Ok, I got everything measured out in my truck. Looks like I'm gonna go with three JL Audio 10w7's, tuned at 32hz, and each sub powered by its own RF power bd 1000a1. Here is the question I have though. I know each amp has its own crossover. Now what if I add a external crossover to the mix? What I'm thinking is that the signal would go from the headunit down to the crossover, then to the amps. Am I on the right track?

I was considering doing this because I'm scared that all the subs may not be playing at the same crossover point. Even though each amp should read "80hz", who is to say that the factory crossovers may not be a little "off"? I figured if I set the external crossover at say "80hz", then no matter what I do at the amps, they'll never go over 80hz.

What does everyone think?

Might not really be necessary, but it would of course give you steeper crossover slopes, if that matters to you or not. I say go for it, you can get active crossovers pretty damn cheap anyway..

wouldnt hurt...except it adds another possible source of added noise...otherwise i would definitely do it...

you could add an EQ between the head unit and the amp and control the frequency with that as well as bring out more clarity in your mids and hi's. I have one for sale. It's a really nice Clarion EQ with a buitl in 24x4 amp for the door speakers. Im only asking 40 bucks. I think this would be great for what your doing, because it has subwoofer controlls that control the freeq for the subs and the power levels going to the amps.

go one big amp or two amps straped(one slave and one master amp) you most likely won't get three amps to run the same...hence you will have cancelation.

if you get a memphis crossover (pretty cheap) it makes your rca outputs all 7.5 volts :)
and yes it does make a difference when you use the crossover to cut off the frequency
