MIAMI (AP) -- For Dwyane Wade, the start of free agency was predictable. He got courted by Pat Riley. The Miami Heat contacted a slew of top free agents when the clock struck 12:01 a.m. Thursday, a deep list that includes Wade, LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Amare Stoudemire and Carlos Boozer, among others.

And of course, Wade was atop the list.

After seven seasons with Miami, Wade doesn't want to leave, yet says it's up to the Heat to put together a roster that will help him contend for more championships.

Riley was already at work on that in the first minutes of free agency, setting up meetings in Los Angeles with some top targets. The Heat traveling party included Riley, coach Erik Spoelstra and minority owner Nick Arison, among others.

NEW YORK (AP) -- Let the bidding and begging begin.

The NBA's free agency period has opened, with LeBron James leading perhaps the deepest group of players to ever hit the market.
Teams could begin making their pitches at 12:01 a.m. EDT Thursday, and some were getting started quickly.

Atlanta's Joe Johnson was expecting early visits in Los Angeles from the Hawks and New York Knicks, with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reporting that the Hawks were prepared to offer the All-Star shooting guard a maximum salary contract.

Things get interesting Thursday, when the New Jersey Nets and Knicks are scheduled for visits to Ohio to meet with James, the two-time MVP who heads the class.

It includes other All-Stars such as Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, Dirk Nowitzki, Amare Stoudemire and Carlos Boozer; veterans such as Shaquille O'Neal and Ray Allen; and young up-and-comers such as Rudy Gay and David Lee.

"We've never had anything like this in my time that I can remember," New Jersey Nets president Rod Thorn said. "There have been big-time free agents before, but never this many teams that are trying to woo them. So it's unprecedented."

Teams were headed around the country to meet with players, though the Mavs were saved a long trip when Nowitzki informed them he would meet with them Thursday in Dallas -- with the message arriving while president Donnie Nelson was at the airport preparing for a flight to Germany.

Showing they planned to be active, the Knicks confirmed on Twitter they would also meet with Wizards swingman Mike Miller in Los Angeles.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- The Minnesota Timberwolves will bring free agents Rudy Gay of Memphis and David Lee of New York in for visits this week.

Team president David Kahn says Gay will come to the Twin Cities on Thursday and stay through Friday and Lee will arrive on Saturday and spend the day.

Shortly after the free agent market opened at 12:01 a.m. Eastern time on Thursday, Kahn called representatives for Gay and Lee and both accepted the invitations.

Gay is a restricted free agent, so the Grizzlies would have the right to match any offer made.

Kahn says the team is also "very close" to agreeing to a deal with Nikola Pekovic, the team's 2008 second-round draft pick who has been playing in Greece. No deal can be signed until July 8.

I hope Rockets get Bosh or Amare in a sign and trade deal.

They won't. bosh will follow lbj to either NJ or Chicago, or if lbj signs back with the cavs then bosh will sign with the heat. Since no one will offer him a max contract except the bright guys who run the knicks amare will sign with them to get that paycheck.

ICED@15K
07-02-2010, 06:05 AM
If "I" were lbj I would sign with the Nets. They'll be able to sign 2 max contracts (bosh, and him), they have d.harris and b.lopez, then they just drafted favors. On top of that they finally got a coach who actually knows how to coach and an owner who is able to wipe his ass for the rest of his life with 100$ bills and still be filthy rich. Not to mention his bff jay-z is there and lbj might get a chance to tag beyonce.

On top of that lbj wants to play in NY, and NJ is being relocated to Brooklyn and a possible name change, which I seriously hope they do b/c honestly when I think of the new jersey nets I thinkn of this (these god awful baby blue jerseys, slob dereck coleman, and just a dirty, cold, dark, place to play)

Houston could offer every player on the roster, but unless Amar'e or Bosh WANTS to come here it doesn't matter. You can't trade a player that's not under contract to you.

i heard he passed on phx offer. which was 5 years 96 million. so he left town for 4 more million? maybe the 5th year was a team option or something.

Phoenix offered him 5 years with $76 million guaranteed.
4th year would be based on the number of minutes played on the first three years.
5th year could become guaranteed with the number of minutes played also.
The Suns had some concerns with his past injuries and wanted to add these clauses into the contract. Stoudemire wasn't having it and so he signed with the NYK.

Point is, the man has shot knees which could fail him during any point in New York, he plays very little defense, and is most probably a direct product of Nash. All the while David Lee is leaving, so its just a lateral move imo.

Also hearing that a Wade/bosh duo will probably happen in either Chicago or Miami. Not sure if bosh will be getting that max contract he's been wanting but it's starting to look like our chances of getting him are slipping away. I wonder what moreys plan B is.

From some espn analyst, (though I dont know if its true) they said that Lebron did not want to do this at all until EPSN stated that all the proceeds from this interview/broadcast will go to Boys/Girls Scout of America.

Due to the unprecedented attention and interest surrounding LeBron's decision, we have decided to make this announcement on national television. By doing so we have generated funds that will be given to the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. LeBron has a longstanding commitment to giving back to the community, and has worked with the Boys and Girls Clubs in cities across the country.

http://lebronjames.com/

Could be true.

I think now that Boozer addition to Rose, and Noah seals the deal to LBJ going to Chicago. Why not? The city won 6 back in the 90s, I think this is a good pack for a few rings..maybe not a guaranteed 6.

This is correct.

I'm not sure how this transfers to his ego since the media is making the big deal out of it, not him. it's not like he is running around trying to collect more money for himself. the media has strung this out to make money on it.

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

someone's mad

CLEVELAND -- Angered and betrayed by LeBron James' decision to leave for Miami, Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert accused the NBA's MVP of quitting during the playoffs.

Gilbert, who posted a letter to Cavs fans on the team's website shortly after James announced his plans to sign with the Heat, told The Associated Press late Thursday night that it's "accountability time" for James.

"He has gotten a free pass," Gilbert said in a phone interview with The AP. "People have covered up for [James] for way too long. Tonight we saw who he really is."

Gilbert said James quit on the Cavs during their second-round series against the Boston Celtics, who rallied from a 2-1 deficit to eliminate Cleveland.

"He quit," Gilbert said. "Not just in Game 5, but in Games 2, 4 and 6. Watch the tape. The Boston series was unlike anything in the history of sports for a superstar."

The Cavaliers were beaten by 32 points in Game 5. During the game, James appeared distracted and uninterested, often glaring at Cleveland's coaches as the Cavs tried to foul to get back into the game in the second half. James also made some puzzling postgame comments, saying he had "spoiled" people with his play over seven seasons.

Gilbert also said he believes James quit on the Cavs in Game 6 of their series in 2009 against Orlando.

"Go back and look at the tape," he said. "How many shots did he take?"

Gilbert, who has owned the Cavs for five years, said he was most disappointed by James' behavior in the months leading up to the superstar's announcement that he is going to Miami to play with Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. Gilbert said James never returned a single phone message or text since the end of the season and that the Cavs were not informed of James' decision until he went on the air.

Gilbert said Rich Paul, one of James' business partners, called the Cavs moments before the announcement.

"LeBron James needs to go to another team with two superstars already so he can win a championship," Gilbert said. "We will win a championship before [the Heat] do."

Cavs reaction

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert gave his reaction to LeBron James leaving in an open letter to fans on the Cavs' website. Letter
• TrueHoop

Gilbert said he now wishes he had done some things differently with James, who spent seven seasons with the Cavs.

"It's not about him leaving," Gilbert said. "It's the disrespect. It's time for people to hold these athletes accountable for their actions. Is this the way you raise your children? I've been holding this all in for a long time."

In Miami, Wade said he was stunned by Gilbert's comments.

"I think I'm happy that I have the owner that I have here in Miami," Wade told The Associated Press late Thursday night. "I'm happy Micky Arison is my owner. I couldn't believe it. I'm speechless. It's very unfortunate and I think it makes LeBron that much better about his decision.

"We knew 'Bron would take some backlash," Wade added in his interview with AP. "I told him he's a strong man for it."

In the letter posted on the Cavaliers' website Gilbert called the process on James' free agency "narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his 'decision' unlike anything ever 'witnessed' in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment."

Gilbert told Cavs fans: "You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER 'KING' WINS ONE"

Gilbert promised that "curse" on Cleveland sports would follow James to Miami.

"The self-declared former 'King' will be taking the 'curse' with him down south," Gilbert wrote. "And until he does 'right' by Cleveland and Ohio, James [and the town where he plays] will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma."

Gilbert finished the letter by promising to put his focus on bringing a championship to Cleveland with the Cavaliers.

"I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

"DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue...."

LOL oh he mad

:really?:

A Letter From Cavaliers Majority Owner Dan Gilbert

Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal.

You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE"

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there.

Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

Just watch.

Sleep well, Cleveland.

Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day....

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only:

DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue....

Sports Illustrated nailed it "The first time I watched LeBron James live, I thought he could be the greatest player ever. The sad truth for us, for him, and for the NBA is that he never really believed it himself."

He just wants to win, doesn't matter how, obviously he couldn't do it in Cleveland for the past few years, so he had to make a move. Plus no one wants to live in Cleveland anyways.

I dont think the way he left is messed up at all. He speaks of loyalty and such, I wonder how many players he traded and such without giving them a heads up? it's quite a common occurance in the NBA for this to happen, yet you bash the guy that made you more money than anyone could. In the end, when it comes to trades and such, it's business. He needs to quit acting like a baby that cries when he doesnt get what he wants.

he should blame himself for cashing in the checks while lebron was out there busting his ass.

Wrd. You give me a washed up shaq, a bum for a pg, and jamison who is streaky as hell as help and expect us to win, AND you expect me to sign another contract again to stay with that same team? Yeah, I think if we were all in his shoes we would have left (if we had winning in mind).

With Jamison sign on for a few more years and Mo Williams who disappers in the playoffs. Shaq who is a shell of himself and Z who is better at shooting jumpers than playing around the rim, Delonte West who has a series of medical problems, their cap space is tied up completely and cant make any roster moves. Lebron has always been said of not having the killer instinct that Kobe has, but I guess that hes got it now.

Lmao, donnie walsh is set to retire from the knicks. After getting fckd by morey last year then lbj lastnight I don't blame him.

ALSO the knicks lost d.lee and basically replaced him with amare meaning the knicks will be in the same spot they were last year. Yup, those picks we have from them are looking miiiiighty good right now.

it is messed up, put it like this, me and you knew lebron was leaving the same time dan gilbert did. every joe schmo knew at the same time as dan gilbert.

it's a business, ppl just don't like the hour special that's why they burn his jersey in cleveland. i think they would of burn his jersey anyways even without the one hour special. Lebron is on the new evil empire. he's the new villain. you either hate him or love him now.

btw, the cavs were close. honestly if they got stoudemire instead of jamison at the deadline they might of have beat boston. i mean they had the most wins in the nba the past 2 years. Supposedly Lebron had a whole bunch of old scrubs on his team anyways and wade had a whole bunch of tito jacksons. that duo with Bosh/Mike Miller and 8 other titos. this team right here though, Video game like.

The lakers prob have one chance this year and it's all over for the league from here on out.

Yup, the second he said he's going to miami to join two superstars in order to win and is leaving his home town his "hero" image went right out the window. On top of that now that kobe is getting more respect for winning two chips without shaq and now that lbj pulled this stunt lastnight kobe is going to look like a good guy now. Fk kobe > : |

this team is like the bulls now. wade/bron = jordan/pippen. Bosh = Rodman or Horace Grant. Mike Miller = Toni Kukoc.

As a Laker fan im excited to see this team form. i always wanted to see these lakers vs 90's bulls on nba 2k. now i get to see the closest thing to it in real life.

man. imagine if the NBA just wants to give this team the benefit of the doubt when it comes to foul calls. they'll goto the line like 100 times a night! David Stern, please go back to old school NBA basketball and let teams try to rough these superstars up.

They don't really need a PG. They can let LBJ/Wade handle the ball since they have good passing instincts. My plan would be to play LBJ/Wade/Bosh/Miller/<insert another 6'7"-6'9" that can run/shoot> and let the other teams chase. The big centers like Dwight and Bynum will have a hard time keeping up with an uptempo team.
