It's a new year, new resolutions, and hopefully new runners as well.

Starting a new thread for those of us who want to start running or are currently running because we enjoy it, train for a big event, or improve our physique. Since we just wellcomed twenty-ten, I figured it would be a good time to start it off.

Here, we can share training tips, times, and/or set up meets to train together if it works out.

I am signed up for the 2010 Chevron Houston Marathon and was wondering who else will be running it, the half marathon or any other event.

So anybody else? Go

Lou!

Pitlab77
01-09-2010, 09:59 AM
Nikes are real POS for running. Funny seeing how bill bowerman (founder) was the track coach at oregon.

I would seriously look into brooks, asics, saucony for running shoes. You should consider your height/weight, stride, pronation, and footing preferences. I can not really tell you neither can anyway tell you "what a good shoe is" with out seeing your actual foot. Plus different shoes even from the same brand will fit differently, even the feel a model has as it evolves changes.

GO to a running shoe store and try some on.

Fleet feet in rice village, or Texas running company in SL are my two choices for shoe stores.

(as to the brand I am partial to brooks shoes)
I own about 6~7 pairs of shoes.
2 current shoes (brooks ghost I gen)

2 worn Brooks defyant (gen I)
1 worn Brooks adrenaline (gen 6 i think)
1 worn Asics GT series

Im gonna start running again. I ran a little bit a couple years ago for a few months. Never made it past 6 miles i a run though befor i quit. Im just looking to stay in shape. I cycle, and lately its been too cold, and sometimes i dont fee like getting all geared up to go ride after a long day at work. I need a change and i need to slim down a bit to so i can get faster on the bike. Im excited, i might start tomorrow. Looking into shoes right now. I like running trails and stuff also, would a cross training show work for an all around kind of thing? I dont think ill be entering any marathons any time soon.

You'll probably want a shoe with more cushioning if your are just going to run to supplement your biking like a gel kayno or something. Since your sig say alief head down to the texas running company in SL and do a shoe fitting.

A little something for you guys

So, im 4 days into it. Im sore, really sore. Ran monday and wednesday a mile each, hiked trails 5 miles tuesday and hiked 6 miles wednesday. My legs were spent, i could hardly stand much less walk. After a good rest and dinner, i got my mtb group together for a ride from memoeial park to downtown and back just to spin a bit and loosen my legs up. I shoulda known it would turn into a hammer fest like always. I RICEd last night and my legs feel a bit better today. I might spin a few miles on the bike again tonight, and run another mile tomorrow depending on how i feel. I ride often and my legs have not felt like this in over 2 years. Running is serious.

FTL as you and he will be banned for minimum of 2 years for doing that.

Minimum Two-Year Event Ban for Unauthorized Runners

Our 2009 race was marred by numerous participants running under the guise of someone else's race number. While this may seem harmless to the parties perpetrating the unauthorized bib transfer, it does convey serious consequences to the organizers and participant field alike.

From race results to finishers' awards being impacted as well as medical staff being able to correctly identify participants in need of treatment, it is imperative that the registration data associated with your race number does in fact belong to you, the participant.

If race organizers become aware that a runner has participated in one of our events with a bib that is not registered to that runner, both the runner and the person to whom the bib is registered will be prohibited from participating in subsequent Houston Marathon events for a minimum of two years.

plus no bib transfers allowed this year

.CÚsar.
01-16-2010, 06:44 PM
Well, he will have to be caught first before he is banned.

carbon-14
01-16-2010, 06:55 PM
its only a 5K, and my brothers slow.... he wont be breaking any records or getting any awards. He just started running and I dont want the event to go to waste since i already payed for it. I think its gonna be a good experience for him!!

Thanks for the heads up anyways Pitlab!

Good luck tomorrow guys/gals!!! All your hard work will pay off/show tomorrow!! Post your results!!!

sorry if that came out rude but seeing your claimed running times I though you would have more respect for rules. It is about principal not how fast or slow someone is. Rules are there for reasons . I personally have seen how misrepresented numbers can affect classing. I remember one race where I was in 2nd place, but wrongly put in the under 20 category. I caused 2 people to think that they had not won. As soon as I found out that my number was misrepresented in the wrong age group I informed the timing table and corrected it and took 6 in my age bracket.

But also its not fair to those that followed the rules to be beat by someone no matter "how slow" they might be.

houston marathon has gone to a lottery system. (sucks. I did not enjoy it last year. Felt like they were herding cattle. if you did not do it you did not miss much. i think I will look into a rock n roll half, or some other local event this year. I wont be out running even 5k's till I feel competative again.

Remember you will run slower when you are doing heat training (when is it not hot in the summer) but will pay off when it cools off. Stay hydrated.

Here are the event details for the run Pitlab mentioned for this weekend: http://therunningcompany.net/component/eventcal/?task=details&eventcal_events_id=25

Sounds like a good race to get back into the routine but unfortunately, I live over 45min away.

You should take it easy for a few weeks until the pain goes away. In the meantime, get properly fitted for running/walking shoes at a runners store. They have properly trained employees to asses the type of foot/strider you are and will suggest a set of shoes for you to try on.

I've never had shin splints an dI walk on wood I never do because I know they are a pain, but I have properly fitted shoes, stretch properly before and after my runs and incorporate different training regimes like downhill stretching when I can and also ice my legs after a big run (not too much though)

A lot of those same stores, although though I do have preferences.

What side of town are you on? Then we could tell you wich ones are close to you. I might be hitting up a store soon as I want to get some singlets and a new pair of shoes that i've been dying fore :eek9::eek3dance since they came out late last year.

No..Doubt I'll do the Houston Marathon. They implemented a lottery system to get in. I may do Sugarlands USAFit Marathon (http://usafitmarathon.com/)

Got the running bug again after a few months off. Here is the link to my run: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/embed/41221031

Registration is less than a week for Chevron Houston...

Thinking about doing Rock and Roll in SA for the half.

Like most people in town i'm saying forget Houston Marathon. The lottery system is BS taking away spots from people that really want to run and who will stay up till 12:01 am to register (like I did last year), while allowing more of the "look at me an my in thing to do running club" to get in. The event has gotten to big, and is poorly organized.

The two tier corral system and the access to them by the runners is a joke. Last year to get into corral one for the 1/2 I had to fight through a fenced in city street and through the whole mass of people from tier two, as well as through a huge mass of people lined up to use 10 porta potties. It took me and my friend almost 30 minutes to push through the crowd to get to the rear of corral number 1. People are then packed like sardines with people just bunching up and doing nothing but clogging up the roads by not staying near their pacing groups. Once you get to the first bridge with there 1/2 and whole combine it is a sea of humanity and no matter what you want to do you are stuck at around a 10 min or slower pace till you finally get into the heights.

Also the goodies back was crap last year. In previous years friends I have know have gotten really nice canvas or cloth bags, last year was a pos plastic bag.
Even the 5k last year had a terrible start with walkers, kids, blocking some of my friends that ran that.

Plus with the USA Olympic trials here this year you can expect even bigger crowds. The only way I will try to register for the Houston is if a group of friends decide to enter as a lot in the lottery.

The rock n roll marathons provided such a better staggered corral system for their runners with 30 or so corrals set for a pace that are released in staggered waves as to not crowd runners.

I'm looking at doing the USA fit sugarland half, and have people trying to talk me in to San Antonio but my fitness has dropped a lot in the last year due to an injury and grad school and I dont feel that I would be at my peak by then.

Just got back from a run I need to start bringing a camera to this trail runs.
Time:
00:48:33
Distance:4.51 mi http://bit.ly/9tO8Pw
Challenger Park run. Almost ran right through a giant spider web with a huge spider in the middle and also came across a deer chilling in the middle of the trail. Needless to say, I took a detour haha. I was not about to be chased down by a deer.
