The final figure comes after a $7,500 federal rebate

The epic development period of the Volt has been unique in many ways, not least of which because it was announced about three years ahead of its actual debut - which is still more than a year out. But this week Bob Lutz told David Letterman one key detail of the upcoming plug-in hybrid from General Motors: its price.

Phrasing it as a 'best estimate' Lutz said the MSRP would sit 'around $40,000' and that the customer would be paying about $32,500 once a $7,500 government rebate is taken into account. That $7,500 rebate is part of a package intended to help boost sales and production of advanced vehicles, including plug-in hybrids.

That price fits well with previous hints and rumors on price - though not with GM's early, optimistic sub-$30,000 estimate - but GM is still expected to be taking a loss on the car even then, at least through the first term of its production. Even at the current price, GM is relying on the tax credit to make the Volt affordable.

Other tidbits dropped by Lutz: the first few examples of the car will be slipping onto showroom floors at the end of 2010, but the average buyer won't be able to find one until 2011.

fack, 40k for this damn car, who spends 40k and worries about gas mileage. I'd take a used c6 instead. If this car was 20kish then it'll be good.

How luxurious is this thing? Gm isn't in the best position to offset costs of production on one car, paid for by sales of another. I think they're bumping up the price due to the government tax credit to try and get more profit out of it.

I still don't understand why they are trying still to push plug in hybrid's instead of doing what the Clarity does with hydrogen.

Because hybrids aren't completely oil dependent, and there is still plenty of oil to make money off of so why would companies push to develop hydrogen quicker?

The battery technology is whats driven the cost up. I have to give GM credit. Typically American manufacturers over the past several decades have avoided introducing cutting edge technology, due to cost and reliability concerns. Which is why they've played catch up for years in just about everyway. If your the first to introduce something. That gives you just as long as anybody to refine and improve its reliability.

Sorry to burst your bubble but honda "hybrids" are weak. All they do is add electric ASSIST to gasoline engines. I think the prius is the only one in the market that is a true hybrid that can drive without the gasoline engine which is 10 miles if I remember correctly. The volt will have that capability but with more range of upto 40 miles.

I would never have to buy gas again.

The front end doesn't look bad, the rest :weirdo: ....... i'd get it for my wife...lol

these people at GM have totally lost their fuckn minds!!! no wonder this company is gonna go belly up. They really think that the avg consumer who is concerned with fuel costs can pony up a lil over 33k before taxes?!?! What a bunch of fuckn morons.

untill hybrids are as efficient as gasoline engines, i'm sticking with dead dinosaurs.
That price is outrageous considering the unproven tech involved. And how many watts does that thing take under charge? If it's pulling 500 or some crazy shit- it isn't even worth having.
