In a move that will likely get California's consumers in a huff, impending legislation may soon restrict the paint color options for Golden State residents looking for their next new vehicle. The specific colors that are currently on the chopping block are all dark hues, with the worst offender seemingly the most innocuous color you could think of: Black. What could California possibly have against these colors, you ask? Apparently, the California Air Resources Board figures that the climate control systems of dark colored cars need to work harder than their lighter siblings – especially after sitting in the sun for a few hours. Anyone living in a hot, sunny climate will tell you that this assumption is accurate, of course. In fact, legislation already exists for buildings that has proven successful at reducing the energy consumption of skyscrapers.

So, what's the crux of the problem... can't paint suppliers just come up with new, less heat-absorbent dark paints? According to Ward's, suppliers have reportedly been testing their pigments and processes to see if it's possible to meet CARB's proposed mandate of 20% solar reflectivity by 2016 with a phase-in period starting in 2012, and things aren't looking good. Apparently, when the proper pigments and chemicals are added to black paint, the resulting color is currently being referred to as "mud-puddle brown." That doesn't sound very attractive, now does it? Windshields, backlights and sunroofs are also slated to get reflective coatings starting in 2012.

When we first heard of this issue, an internal debate immediately began as to whether this might be an elaborate early April Fool's joke, but it isn't. Read through CARB's complete Cool Cars Standards and Test Procedures here (http://www.arb.ca.gov/cc/cool-paints/final_cool_cars_workshop_presentation31209.pdf) (PDF link) for more.

I guess i can see how black cars absorb more heat through the scientific properties of light and all that, but the biggest difference would be reflective tint and light colored interiors. Banning all dark colors seems retarded and over the top. Just my .02

I only go to California to enjoy the weather and make fun of the sissy locals.

As far as "solar reflectivity" goes, I think absorbing the heat is better for the environment than reflecting it back out. I'm surprised they aren't investing in making photovoltaic paint. That would actually be worthwhile

Yeah, I just moved away from Cali.
I loved the scenary, and there is so much shit to do (like snowboarding and surfing in the same day), but the people and laws drove me insane.
Did you know that instead of banning black cars it would save more power and pollute less to turn work computers off at night?
Oh my gosh, let's not do it the easy way, let's do it the hard way.

Trying to ban black cars is almost like imposing free speech. Banning a color, isn't that censorship? Pretty sure there's something in that lil thing....oh what was it called...the constitution?

Then again we have been ignoring it lately...

i understand what you are saying tim, but epa regulations have been changing cars for years. as absurd as this is, it really isnt out line for government types to suggest outrageous things when obviously their are more pertinent issues at hand.

If they're using that stupid logic of a darker vehicle using more A/C then they should just ban black people and some latins because wouldn't they use the A/C more than other races? Getting hotter quicker due to skin tone, causing more emmisionz!

No offense is intended but I'm just trying to provide an analogy to show how ridiculous this proposed idea is.

What about fat asses? They should be banned also. Adding 2 times the weight of a normal person to a car over loads it, plus people with blubber retain more heat:blob:
You should also ban hot coffee or any hot foods, because if you eat it in the car it can heat up the cabin. Plus when I drink hot coffee my face gets hot from the temps and the caffeine. Making me turn the A/C on more.

It's a real shame that we can't cut California's land mass off from the rest of the United States, drag it out into the middle of the Atlantic, and sink the bastard.

I think that they have cars confused with the polar ice caps. Where big white ice caps would reflect sunlight and keep earth cool, and dark water absorbs heat, warming it up.

But on a global scale black cars are just fireants under a microscope.

You cant be shocked though about california doing this. I mean these are the same people who elected Nancy Pelosi. Who is mentally retarded, to represent them.

Just watch what happens when they start imposing the new laws coming into effect that ban the resale of used children toys/clothes and now BOOKS because of fear of lead from China, yet they don't stop the Chinese crap from still flowing over. As long as its all new lead based toys, its ok.
