In the run-up to the Volkswagen Bluesport's unveiling, the business case for the mid-engine roadster was being hashed out in the blogosphere. In order for VAG to make a profit on a production version of the Bluesport, the chassis would need to underpin at least new two models: one from VW and another from Audi. But a variant from Volkswagen's new parent – Porsche – was always in the background. German auto pub AutoZeitung decided to cobble together its own interpretation of the Porsche version and came up with this: the Porsche Speedster.

If Porsche decides to adapt the Bluesport's platform for its own model, expect it to slot in below the current Boxster sometime in 2013. Power could be provided by a either a 1.4-liter four-pot or, more likely, a variant of the Audi TT's 2.0-liter TFSI putting out around 250 hp to the rear wheels through a dual-clutch gearbox. Weight distribution would be a thoroughly entertaining 45:55 front-to-rear, with an overall curb weight of around 2,600 pounds. Porsche could employ its PASM active suspension system and offer carbon-ceramic brakes as an option, but as the kit list expands, the Speedster's price would get dangerously close to the Boxster's -- one reason this project may never see the light of day.

If it has that tiny damn motor this thing better not cost more than 40k fully loaded.

Well, it's tiny but it produces 170 hp and 170 tq thanks to direct injection and being twin charged. I would imagine in this application it would be tuned to make 200 or more horsepower though.
At 2600 lbs it wouldn't be fast, but would be fun to drive. Maybe like a base model sky, etc.

the tfsi is a twincharged motor. its not too bad and is awesomely efficient. you guys need to understand, the cheaper the engine, the more affordable the car. also now that porsche has more power fo ownership in the company...

thats why it looksl ike the vw concept: which is also called bluesport. not to mention audi is also getting a car like this named the R1

we had one of the first boxsters in texas and the original one had only 200hp i think and was marginally heavier. it was plenty fun, its not all about straight line acceleration....

Also if its truly a "reborn" 356, what did they have?? 1.1, 1.2 l engines? I dont know if the motor options were ever above 2.0l. I know the times have changed so the power levels will be much higher, but a 6-cyl power plant would just mistreat history.

yea im pretty sure they had between 1200 and 1600. but it was a volks motor so you could build a hot 2000cc and drop in.
