The production version of the 200EX concept car will first hit showrooms early next year
The production version of the Rolls-Royce 200EX concept unveiled at this month’s Geneva Motor Show is still a year away from hitting showrooms but already there's word that a number of models - not just a sedan - based on the concept are in the pipeline. These include new Coupe and Convertible versions of the upcoming ‘baby’ Rolls-Royce, both of which are expected to arrive in 2011.
A host of other details have also now been officially confirmed by the company, including engine type and power. A 6.6L turbocharged V12 will power the 'baby' Rolls, with an 8-speed gearbox sending the power rearward. Power at the crankshaft is expected to top 500hp (373kW). The engine itself may be a bit smaller than the Phantom line's powerplant, but output is still very healthy.
"There has been a great deal of interest in this car since we first talked about producing a new model series in the autumn of 2006 and the reaction 200EX received at its unveiling at Geneva was very positive. As we move another step closer to the start of production at Goodwood, it is exciting to be able to share some of the specific technical details with customers and the media," said Rolls Royce CEO Tom Purves at a company event this weekend.
While a final name is yet to be confirmed by Rolls-Royce, many enthusiasts are predicting that the car will take on the 'Silver Ghost' nameplate that was first used over a century ago by luxury marque.
"RR4 will deliver an authentic Rolls-Royce experience to owners, so expect peerless comfort and build quality. However, we have consciously engineered this car to be more involving and dynamic for those owners around the world that will wish to drive it themselves," said Purves.
The new saloon will slot in under the company's flagship car, the Phantom, and in keeping with this positioning it will be smaller all around. While the Phantom's dimensions stretch to around 5,834 mm, the 200EX concept is around 400mm shorter and this aspect will likely be carried on to the production version, reports AutoTelegraaf.
With a big difference in size, there will also be a fairly substantial price difference between the Phantom and the new baby Roller. While the Phantom starts at around $425,700, the new model is expected to compete with marques such as BMW and Mercedes, as well as traditional rival Bentley's Continental range, which means pricing could fall somewhere in the $200,000 to $300,000 range.
