The production version of 2007’s Chevrolet Camaro Convertible concept car is back on track for an early 2011 launch
After last week’s report that GM’s plans for a high-performance Camaro Z28 had been canceled and the Camaro Convertible was on hold comes a little good news but also some bad. The good news is that the Convertible is back on track for an early 2011 launch, while the bad news – you guessed it – is that the Z28 is looking less and less likely to ever come to fruition.
Cost cutting at GM and fears that the German supplier of the Camaro Convertible’s roof mechanism was about to go under led to last week’s claims that the car was put on hold indefinitely. MotorTrend, however, is reporting that the supplier in question is still in business and has a new agreement signed with GM.
GM’s stance on the whole issue of the Camaro Convertible is that the car was always due to go on sale at least 12 to 18 months after the launch of the Coupe, which officially went on sale this month.
As for the Z28, GM was planning to add the 550hp (410kW) 6.2L V8 engine from the Cadillac CTS-V to the Camaro’s engine bay and to destroy any chances of the Dodge Challenger SRT8 and Shelby Ford Mustang claiming the title of ‘modern-day muscle car king’. Sadly, the Z28’s expected $50 million development price tag, impending 35mpg CAFE regulations, and niche statues meant it was virtually dead from the start.
