The news indicates both may be revived, but the market freeze means things must change
Supplier lawsuits and General Motors' own weak financial position threatened to delay the introduction of the 2010 Camaro despite the 14,000 pre-orders, but the car's production was launched last week without a hitch. Today, however, word is emerging that the Z28 and Convertible versions are not going to materialize any time soon.
Previous reports on the Camaro Z28 - an even higher-performance spec than the SS - indicated that even though design and development was complete, the car might not be built due to cost issues with such a low-volume variant. Now it seems the word inside GM is that the car is canceled - at least for the present, reports The Detroit Bureau.
The Camaro Convertible, which has long been around in concept form, is also rumored to be a casualty of the downturn, though its future is still a bit more positive than the Z28's. The word is that the convertible will still be built, but will be delayed until GM is in a more stable and financially prosperous position, sometime after summer 2010.
Neither of these moves is surprising, given the current goings-on in the car and credit markets, and though we'll miss the Z28's rip-roaring performance and sharp looks, canceling it certainly sounds like the smarter decision.
