The stripped-down models is billed as a blank canvas for tuners

High-performance, inexpensive rear-wheel drive coupes are uncommon sights, but Hyundai has just added one to the short list with its new Genesis Coupe R-Spec. Starting at $23,750 and offering a minimal range of features - the better for later customization - the R-Spec promises to be just what the aftermarket tuner wants.

Basic equipment of the R-Spec includes the 2.0T 2.0L turbocharged engine rated at 210hp (157kW), a six-speed manual transmission (no automatic option), 19in alloy wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tires, and Brembo brakes - 13.4in up front, 13.0in in back. A 'track-tuned' suspension and Torsen-type limited-slip differential offer improved handling over the standard Coupe, while R-Spec badging lets onlookers know what's under all the aftermarket gear.

Other standard elements - not so common on a stripped-down track day car, but handy for a daily driver - include keyless entry, front, side and side curtain airbags, active front head restraints, air conditioning, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, power windows and door locks, an MP3-capable six-speaker stereo system with iPod/USB conncetivity and projector beam headlamps.

The basic package offers as much performance as the Track model, but at a $3,000 discount, freeing up some cash for whatever the buyer might like to add - perhaps a larger turbo, intercooler and associated electronics, or maybe a serious audio/video system and a unique paintjob. Whatever the mods, the R-Spec goes the extra mile to draw in the tuner market. Only sales will show how successful Hyundai has been.

The remainder of the Genesis line also received pricing today, with the basic 2.0T starting out at $22,000 and ranging upwards to $31,000 for the top-of-the-line 3.8L V6 Track model. Full pricing details are below.

Yeah, I agree. But $2.3k difference is significant amongst the frugal crowd (Jews, Indians, Filipinos). Not to mention the 100k warranty and the 1-year take back incentive. Good value.

The Genesis has the following available features: HID headlights, proximity keyfob and push-start ignition, leather interior, and Bluetooth.

I would absolutely love the WRX if it would come with these features. I know people don't usually buy Subaru's for comfort and luxury features, but it would sure be nice to get that extra value on top of the great performance.

"available" doesn't count for much. i was thinking along the lines of the laundry list of 08-09 wrx upgrades that justified keeping the 08 on the market as a completely different car while the 09 had an almost identical price tag. if you add what the 09 upgraded as "available" options, you'd probably be talking about $8k in upgrades.

Competition speaking wouldnt this car be shooting at the Z and G37 with the V6 model?

I'm not saying it's better or worse, just stating its competition.

its primary competitors are the mustang GT and the 350/370z

JHizzleX
02-12-2009, 11:13 AM
i think it has a wide range of competition. stock with only 210 hp thats in Si and Cobalt SS range. but even with stock turbo i think you could easily push it up to WRX/Ralliart/MS3 range and on up the the 370z mustang and others

judging from the way my car responds to bolt-ons granted it has a bigger turbo, i would still expect this car with the same motor to get some pretty decent gains

Whether those options are listed as available or standard, it would be nice if the WRX at least offered the aforementioned features for those willing to pay the price. The bar for standard features has certainly been raised by this Genesis. Some of the other brands (Nissan, Mazda) have already caught on.

Even with the argument that those extra features would push the price into STI territory, the STI only has the HID's and Bluetooth.

I would really just like the push-start ignition to be a standard feature on the WRX. I don't mind putting in retrofitted HID projectors and a Kenwood nav system if that's what it had to come down to. The JDM WRX (STI, I think) has push-start, so I don't see why we can't get it here.

wrd. who really wants w rated rated dunlop sp01s, active center differential addition offering rwd bias, sport petal kit, what used to be a $3k ground kit with sti wing, sport seats that can accept a race harness, larger turbo, free-er flowing exhaust, etc as standard features when you can have push button start??

and, i'm not knocking the car, i love the concept, i was just fishing for features that were eye openers comparable to those listed above to justify the value against a competitor. :dunno:

Your points have been duly noted, but again, those are really just performance features, for the most part. The WRX clearly trumps the Genesis and most other comparable cars in the performance department. I'm just pointing out some of the minor conveniences and comforts that I wish Subaru offered.

i agree that there's little things that make a car special. a few of the minor things that i didn't know mine offered until i got it was the sti-ish gauge sweep, the illuminated entry that dims out after you're in, the fact that the radio volume fades gradually as you turn it on and off. little things, but appreciated none-the-less.

wow thats pretty badass, i never knew that about the 08-09 wrx, those are really appealing cars to me, the one thing that is a make or break for some people is it being a wagon vs the genisis coupe being.... well.... a coupe... haha

i wish that nissan would step up their A game and bring out a new FR coupe that is a little smaller than the 350/370z with a inline 4 turbo. they seem to be too hot and heavy into this vq37 lately. and a silvia replacement would only boost their company's selling IMO.

im personally waiting on the toyota/subaru coupe ive been hearing about, if they havent canceled that project yet.

You won't have to wait long....HKS already has an upgrade kit fully developed and I'm sure that sport turbo upgrades from the Evo(turbo only) would only need to be reclocked to work. All internal mods should transfer over and fuel upgrades are ready as well. You could easily have double the hp two days after picking it up.

im surprise that so many people would trade it their current car for the Genesis and that this Hyundai thread has gone to 4 pages. im recalling some of the older threads where some of y'all were saying how ugly the Genesis is and ect.

I'm sure if you drove a Civic, you'd be more than happy to trade with anything :P

They're just bitter they didn't do the right thing and buy the G35 coupe instead. Altima Coupe 2.5 is the Facepalm Edition.

As the former owner of two Hyundai's I can attest that Hyundai is a high quality builder. Probably the most underrated manufacturer in the world right now. If their Genesis sedan can beat out Lexus, they must be doing something right.

I was very surprised they didn't try to stuff the 4.6L V8 from the Genesis sedan into the coupe (they said it wouldn't fit). But considering gas prices will probably go up again, it's probably a good choice.

Honestly, I want this car. I've wanted it every since it was leaked 2 yrs ago. The only question as to whether I will get it will be if I can fit my two kids in the back seat.

As far as the Altima Coupe vs Genesis coupe argument?

Altima Coupe = FWD
Genesis Coupe = RWD

Besides, I don't think they're aiming at the Altima Coupe... they're aiming at the G37.

"According to Hyundai, the short list of Genesis coupe competitors includes the Infiniti G37, BMW 335i coupe, Ford Mustang GT, Mazda RX-8, and Mitsubishi Eclipse GT, though a comparison of specs reveals the G37 matters most." - MotorTrend

I know it's "only" a Hyundai, but please don't insult this car. It has more promise than a Scion ever will.
