Racers, hotrodders and collectors could all be eying the platform

The fund-raising process of auctioning off much of the contents of General Motors' historic Heritage Collection of cars hits a potential high-note, at least to a do-it-your-selfer's eye, with the sale of a Corvette ZR-1 rolling chassis. Though the exact state of the chassis isn't known, it does appear to be complete with a 6.2L supercharged LS9 engine.

Full suspension, wheels and tires and a very minimalist amount of interior elements sum up the remainder of the included equipment, but that won't stop hotrodders and customizers the world over from heading to the Barrett-Jackson auction where the chassis will be sold.

The auction materials indicate the car may not be titled or licensed, however, hinting that it may be a pre-production vehicle or even a display-only model built for use at the 2008 Detroit Show as part of a technology showcase. Nevertheless, if it is structurally sound, it could become the basis for a very fast race car or track-day special.

Analysts have not yet ventured guesses as to what the chassis might bring at auction, but the market will shake the matter out once the gavel comes down next week.

It's called watching their asses. This chassis lacks a lot of safety equipment, and if GM was to sell this as a "street legal" car, then some idiot would go and wreck it and then turn around and sue GM because it broke their legs or something stupid.

There's no telling how un-production ready this chassis is. It would be retarded of GM to let someone out on the street with it knowing that it isn't safe.

Yeah understood, but there are things called waivers, and assumptions of liability in this country, GM could totally relinquish itself of liability.

As far as VIN's go, what do custom car builders do? The people who fabricate everything in their garage and make a street legal roadster.
