When introducing a new sports car, virtually every automotive company has a similar game plan. Build up the hype by introducing a great looking mid-level performance model, follow up with an entry level destined to be the sales leader, and after a few years introduce an all out performance model to keep up consumer interest. So it comes as little surprise that Volkswagen has announced a new entry level Scirocco for the UK, right on the heels of the recently launched Scirocco GT.

Powering the entry level model is a 1.4L TSI engine with 160 PS, which enables it to run from 0-62 mph in 8 seconds and return 42.8 mpg. Newly available on both the Scirocco and Scirocco GT is a 2.0L TDI engine which produces 140 PS and allows them to reach 62 mph in 9.3 seconds. Fuel economy in the combined cycle for the TDI is 55.4 mpg with a six speed manual and 51.4 mpg when equipped with DSG.

The new entry level Scirocco still comes with a decent amount of standard equipment including a six disc CD changer, air conditioning, 17” alloy wheels, and adaptive chassis control. Prices start at 18,790£ for the 1.4L TSI and climb to 21,770£ for the Scirocco GT with the 2.0L TDI and DSG, a full pricing breakdown can be seen in the press release below.

They think it's too similar to the GTI. It costs more but with a few extra features included, so cost evens out, and it only looks different. VW probably doesn't want to have a niche car like this, especially at such a low price point.

It's okay with a car you can charge out the wazoo for, like MB's CLS.

Besides, VW decided to give us a different niche car in the form of the Passat CC. That was enough of a gamble as it is.

Kind of an invalid point, situation is the same over in the uk..they still get the very similar GTI for a slightly lower price

they HAVE to be sending it here. I saw their test vehicle cruising around houston a couple months ago.

it was mad sexy. I tried to get her to step on it a little bit since I was driving the scooby! She didn't, though :(

The market allows for niche models like that to thrive. That's why the VAG can sell VW, Seat and Skoda there, although the cars are fairly identical.

The US isn't quite so conducive to the notion of niche vehicles. If the Scirocco really does come, it will be interesting to see how it does. Are GTI sales really good enough to take a hit due to the Scirocco winning over some buyers? :dunno:

^ are you being serious? what's the main breaker for US Automakers? looks to me like niche vehicles and rebadged models make up the bulk of the production line. plus, this could be an all new model for the US markets, and that would be a main selling point right there

^whats the point of testing a car in a region it will not be utilized? (out side of track based testing)

the point is to test it in many different areas around the world. dude dont automatically assume that because theyre testing it hear that it automatically means it will be here.

the scirocco was just recently released on the other side of the pond.

if it does come here, it wont be for a long time. 4 years, like it took the old school scirocco.

with the release of the new gti, the new cc, the routan, and potential mid-engine roadster, the scirocco will be to competetive withing the sales of audi and hell vw itself.

also with Porsche coming on board and criticizing the R8 and other audi/ vw models, i doubt it.

i can understand that, which is why i wasn't all too hyped up about the test here, rather just wondering what other perks would be gained from outside testing.

we can only hope that they find reason to release it here within the states, and at a reasonable time from now.

but everything's just speculation until further announcement
