General Motors confirmed at last year’s Los Angeles Auto Show that its Chevrolet Beat concept car would enter production in South Korea and eventually be sold in Asian and South American markets. Latest reports indicate that hew final version, which will be smaller than the current Chevrolet Aveo, could also be sold in North America in an effort to win customers during a time of record fuel prices.
At just 3,505mm long, the Beat would be among the smallest cars sold in the U.S. Only the Smart ForTwo is shorter.
The final version is expected to get better than 40mpg (5.9L/100km) and according to people close to the project the vehicle is being considered for North America, reports Bloomberg. The other reason for the introduction of the ultra-efficient vehicle is to help meet new CAFE regulations set to roll out over the next decade.
GM is currently considering several different options to improve the efficiency of its lineup. Other initiatives include the introduction of a small pickup and an expansion of the number of versions of the Volt plug-in electric car, insiders have revealed. Additionally, GM will increase production numbers of its compact Chevrolet Cobalt and develop a more fuel-efficient vehicle to replace the Cadillac Escalade SUV.
