As Ford’s market share in the U.S. continues to dwindle – dropping to a new low of 13% this month – its CEO Alan Mulally is looking at further ways to cut costs and right now it appears nothing is sacred. Some of the measures Ford has already confirmed will take place as part of its ongoing turnaround plan is the reduction of more jobs in North America, the idling of more plants, and the axing of some model lines. However, despite several official denials, new reports claim Ford may also sell Volvo and possibly drop Mercury altogether.

During an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Mulally revealed there were several other options to reduce costs that Ford had not yet employed. When asked about the sale of Volvo, Mulally wasn’t willing to comment but an inside source told reporters the Blue Oval CEO is seriously considering selling Volvo and discontinuing the Mercury line.

Such a move would leave Ford with just two brands, Ford and Lincoln, plus a controlling stake in Mazda.

Since joining Ford back in 2006, Mulally has managed to turnaround a loss of more than $12 billion during the worst auto-sales downturn in more than a decade, establish a new global design team, and restructure the organization to focus on its core businesses, which has already seen the quality of Ford products improve to industry-best levels.

Mercury is dead weight. Their cars are nice, but they don't sell enough of them.

not sure what mercury cars your thinking of, the rebadged fords that mercury is selling all seem to lack substance for the price and fact you are driving a mercury.

blah blah blah, I'm positive that you've never driven a Milan. I don't like Ford vehicles, but I can still see a good car when I see one.

ford needs to rebadge the C30 as a focus and bring it here.

oh wait, theres allready a focus with the same engine, the ST.

what happened to fords whole deal about they couldn't bring the euro foci here because they would be to expensive in america? If they can sell the volvo c30 for low 20s, im sure they could sell a 230hp foci for around the same.

The new guy at Ford is slowly pulling its head out of its ass. We are slated for the euro focus in 2010 I believe.

We also didn't get the Euro Focus because the turbo version was quicker than the Mustang, lol.

what they don't get is, The Mustang is Iconic.

Im pretty sure my dad would pic a Mustang GT over a turbo Focus anyday, even if it was faster.

Wasn't BMW insterested in puchasing Volvo. Although they are denying it I remember reading that they were "meeting to discuss the possibilities."

Exactally, I'm saying it is ridiculous that a focus is better in every way performance wise.

There were talks of Ford doing some brand differentiation with mercury, by badging some of the euro fords as mercurys and selling them here.

I don't know if anything came of that.

I think Ford is planning some big things for 2010. The 2010 Taurus will be a nice apology for the latest abominations.
