The idea of an electric Pony car or Shelby Cobra may not sit well with some but California-based HST International and design firm Tjaarda have developed a pair of electric vehicles ready for sale based on the aforementioned muscle cars. Dubbed the Tjaarda EVX Mustang and HST Shelby Cobra EVX, the two new cars will be on show this weekend at the 34th Annual Toyota GP in Long Beach, California.

Both cars are true zero emission vehicles and feature electric motors using lithium iron phosphate battery packs developed by K2 Energy Solutions. With 1,355Nm (1,000ft-lb) of torque at zero rpm and a peak output of 300hp, the cars are capable of reaching 60mph from rest in less than four seconds and can still drive over a 100 miles on a single charge.

The Tjaarda EVX Mustang has been tested accelerating from 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds and reaching a top speed of 120mph. Charging the batteries takes about eight hours with a 110 volt outlet and just over three hours with a 220 volt plug, and the cost of electricity works out to be just 3c per mile.

The HST Shelby Cobra EVX has the capability to run 0-60 in 3.2 seconds, a top speed of 150 mph and a range of 120 miles.

The Tjaarda EVX Mustang starts at $80,000, while the Cobra comes in at $125,000.

the only thing that scares me is 100miles on a charge so to get to dallas on a 110 volt would take about a day

and think about it a mustang gets lets say 13mpg at 350 per gallon so cost 26 cents per mile and if you drive the car for 50,000 miles then that comes to $13,000 for gas so you would have to put 175,000 miles on the mustang to get even to what it would cost to buy a mustang ($35,000) and be even by going with electric. no me for electric cars to take off it will have to be close to the original price

But can that $35,000 Mustang do 0-60 in 3.9 seconds? HST's markup isn't all about being green, there's also a huge performance benefit. Aside from battery maintenance, I wonder how much maintenance the electric motor(s) require.

A range of 100 miles is pretty meager, though. That's about a one day round trip work commute for some Houstonians.

Those are just track cars for greenies.

There is a quickly developing market for the turnkey track cars that still manage to earn a green rating. This trend is especially popular in states with tougher emissions laws such as California.

At those prices they surely aren't looking the average commuter trying to save a few bucks on gas, this also explains the low range. 120 miles at the track would easily be 40-60 laps. That is plenty of laps for the weekend Andretti.
