The fledgling Chinese auto industry has been embroiled in scandals of stealing designs and producing poor quality cars but despite this one major carmaker has already been selling vehicles in the U.S. with engines sourced from China. The truth of the matter is Americans may already have a Chinese engine under the bonnet of their car because GM has been selling its Chevrolet Equinox with a powerplant sourced from across the Pacific.

This is the first instance of a Chinese engine in an American car, revealed CSM Worldwide analyst Eric A. Fedewa during a recent interview with The Detroit News. The move, according to Fedewa, was an exercise by GM to see how much money could be saved in the cost of production. In fact, only 55% of parts used in the Equinox are sourced locally, the rest coming mostly from Japan and China.

Is this really a problem though? In an increasingly globalized world, consumers are less concerned about the origin of their cars. Technological advancements in quality control and production have allowed major corporations to move operations overseas in order to make savings on labor, materials and other expenses while essentially maintaining quality and efficiency.

If you’re worried about driving a Chinese engine, there’s bad news for the future. China will not just be supplying engines for American cars, but whole vehicles as well. Chrysler, which has signed a deal with China’s Chery auto, is likely to become the first carmaker to sell a Chinese-built car in North America with a new Dodge compact car slated to arrive by the end of the decade.

Not sure what to think.

I think I'd be happier finding out I had a J35 in my Saturn Vue.

Chinese manufactured engines shouldn't have bad quality control.

i hope u'r right. it seems there are gonna be quite a few chinese-made engines in the US and i'm planning to open up shop sometime -- i'm gonna be pissed if i can't safely get more than 2x the power output as stock due to crap castings and whatnot haha

Yeah if you have ever serviced a tranny in a Equinox you can tell its made in china. Biggest peice of shit I've ever seen. Next time your at a GM dealership, ask the sales man to show you the transmission fluid level on a Equinox.

I am pretty sure this whole thing about outsourcing has been going on for awhile..i believe GM and Honda have done some motor swapping in the past..only difference here is its from china...which will assuredly tick some people off.

No they don't call it that. It's a "Equinox Sport", Yeah, thats why i was like WTF? a Equinox SS so i drove it around and when i got into my stall i noticed the "Sport" emblem in the back. Then my shop foreman came over and was like "WTF a Equinox SS?", i was like nope a SPORT...betta recognize foo. So then he was like when your done with your servicing call me. So i did and we took it out for a "spin" It had some get up and go!! and some nice suspension to go with it.

Must be, I work on all the shitty 3.4's , they have some badass brakes but I guess I'm just used to my 4 wheel drums on my 65 bug.

The sad part is this might actually raise the quality of GM products.

Thats pretty old news. The equinox has had a chinese engine from the beginning.
I've had plenty of bad experiences with chinese made products. The issue in quality seems to be in whether the company owned the manufacturing facility there, or if they subletted the manufacturing to a firm over there.

Yea, you're right. The v6 LNJ engine has apparently always been built in china and shipped here. Although, it is being built under Shanghai GM... I found this all out today.
