ok the book doesn't explain how to break this down...
107º54'+37º49'
i know how to break 90º down, but not 107º
do i just bring down 107º and write 54' over 60 minutes?
thanks!

man, i get the gist of it, but my teacher has a heavy accent, so its 10x harder, but reading the book helps.

i think it should be 145 degree and 43 second....i might get it wrong since i had that class approx....3 years....

(107+34 = 144 degrees)+
(54/60 + 49/60 = 1 43/60) = 145 43/60 degrees or 145 degrees and 43 minutes or 8743π/10800 radians.

I separated the whole numbers (degrees) from the fraction part (minutes) to add the mixed number. Much like adding 1 2/3 + 2 2/3 = 3 + 4/3 or 4 1/3.

how did you get 43 (1.71)?
THEPHILOSOPHER
02-04-2008, 08:07 PM
54/60 + 49/60 = 103/60 = 1 (103-60)/60 = 1 43/60

You're taking college trig, I assume?
Which book are you using, and where are you taking it?

PS: If you use a Ti-83+ or higher it can add in degrees, minutes, and seconds.

i have a casio scientific calculator, i do not have the money for a ti, haha
yes i am, math is my least favorite subject, haha.
i am taking it at north harris and i am using the trigonometry 8th edition (picture of an eagle on the cover)
i have another that i need help with, now we have seconds...
180º-85º36'2"

180º = 180 + 0/60 + 0/3600
85º36'2" = 85 + 36/60 + 2/3600
I need to turn 2 degrees (in 180) into minutes and seconds (so I have enough of each to work with, I'll turn 1 degree in to 60 minutes and the other into 3600 seconds.)
180º = 178 + 60/60 + 3600/3600
85º36'2" = 85 + 36/60 + 2/3600
Now subtract 178-85 = 93
60/60 - 36/60 = 24/60
3600/3600 - 2/3600 = 3598/3600
Leaving me with: 93º24'3598" which is correct, but not simplified. To simplify I need to find the one degree that's missing.
3598/60 = 59.96666666... Which means 59 more minutes.
But how many seconds am I left with?
Well it's 3598 - (60*59 = 3540) = 58
Leaving me with: 93º(24+59)'58" = 93º83'58" = 94º23'58"

The second half is misleading because I know that 3598" = 1º - 2"= 59'58"
I loathe degrees minutes, seconds - radians ftw. 94º23'58" = 169919π/324000 radians. :lol:

True, but if I were going to do this problem:
I know I need 0 seconds in 180 so I need 58 more.
Which, makes a minute and I need to have 0 minutes in 180 so I need 23 more.
Which makes one degree and I need 94 more of those to make 180 degrees.

if YOU EVER want to subtract degrees and leave them in deg min sec form.
then do this
90 deg = 89 deg 59 min 60 sec
then if u want to convert into decimal divide seconds by 60, add to the minutes because now the decimals are minutes, then divide that by 60 and that gives you degrees.
Easy stuff since I had to take a whole class on just surveying which is all triangulation. I didn't even take trig. laters
