i have no investments (other than 401k) ,no dependents, single and only make 40k a year...
the only form i need to fill out/send in is the 1040 EZ correct?
i filled it all out, did the math, attached my w2's and am getting $1135 back.
it all seems right to me, but i see lots about other forms and all sorts of other jazz in the booklet so i just wanted to double check
usually my parents helped/did this for me but this is my 1st time filing by myself, just want to make sure im crossing my T's and.....dotting my.... lower case j's..... (waynes world.....)

go online to www.taxact.com and file through them. It is free and will get it in about 2 weeks or pay someone to do it right.

No mortgage interest? Student loan interest?
If not, it's just plugging in your W2 numbers, getting the exemption and standard deduction.

How long have you been contribuiting to your 401k plan? If you file 1040 long form you can possibly get more back. You can file form 8880: Credit for qualified retirement savings.

when u do it online, you'll do 1 W2 at a time. usually after u input 1 then u add the next W2 and do it all over again

use an online service. Most are free if you make less than 40-50k a year.
I used turbotax for years and im a CPA. (Audit though not tax)
Here is the IRS website listing all free tax services

what do you do, when the school sends you their tax form or whatever showing you how much you paid for school? I want to hopefully get some money back from education tax credit or so. I also have a W2 form from work, what should i do.

Turbotax is a good one to use. I used them this year and it was very easy to follow. I also have a 1098-T and it told me exactly what numbers I should be looking for on the form and what to enter. :thumb:
On the 1098-T, you should have an amount that they billed you (box 2) or the amount they rec'd as payment from you (box 1). If you received any grants, like me, you would subtract the amount in box 5 (i think, i can't remember right now but it's the one for grants/scholarships) from the amount in box 1 or 2 and that's the amount you would enter on form 8863 (separate form for education credits). Turbotax will go through with you to see which education credit will yield the most return.
