Ok, I put my old laptop in my dad's office for the time being so he can start using the internet and stuff. It is a old skool Dell inspiron 7500 with a p3 500 mhz processor. I saw a 750mhz processor on ebay for 10 bucks so i said what the heck, and I bought it. After installing the new processor, the laptop will not boot! I hit the switch to turn it on, and it acts like its gonna start and then it just shuts down. I dunno why its doing that. Is there something else i gotta do besides just installing the new cpu? BTW, i installed the old cpu back on and the laptop boots up normal. Can anybody help? I know its an old computer, but im just trying to get it running a little faster so my dad can just surf the web. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

im guessing its this?
Dell Inspiron 7500R
Intel Mobile Pentium III microprocessor running at 450 and 500 MHz

did is your $10 processor a mobile pentium 3?

maybe the chipset will not support a higher FSB proc, or maybe the ram isn't fast enough to match to the bus speed of the proc.

Yes the original processor is a Pentium III running at 500 mhz.

The one that I bought on ebay is a Pentium III running at 750 mhz.
It works fine with the 500mhz processor, but when i put the 750mhz processor it turns on for about 2 secs(nothing shows on screen) and shuts down.

As for ram it has 160mb. I have 512mb on the way to put in it. Should I wait to see if it will work once the laptop has 512mb of ram? What else could be the problem? Thanks!

Negative, its mobile pentium what I bought. I think only mobile processors would fit in that socket, wouldnt they?

you could try reseting the CMOS but i doubt thats the problem. If it works with the old 500mhz in it than just keep it that way. Pick windows 98 or 2000 to install on it and optimize it. I had a p233mhz thinkpad I used w/ win98 on it up until a number of months ago when the power connector broke. I was more than happy with it. Besides, you probably wouldnt notice much difference in speed between a 500mhz and 750mhz processor.
