They're the ones who need the money. Thats a fucking new suit or sunglasses for people that bring in 150k. A person at the bottom of the income totem pole however can buy grocerries, keep the heat on and other things like survive. Those people are also going to spend the money quicker and putting money into the economy quickly is the goal right?

you really think so?
i seem to remember recently a bunch of low income families/minorities abusing the help FEMA gave them. do you remember? i think they called themselves "victims" of some sort of natural disaster. the stories and PROOF from records shown what the debit cards were used on, proves they didnt care much about groceries and heat.
i hear what you're trying to say, but those who DO pay income taxes work their asses off to make the money that they do.

I wasn't implying that people who do pay taxes don't need the money in itself, what I was trying to say was that they don't need it as much as someone whos poor. If you want to get money into the economy you give it to people who'd spend it quicker.

Why not? Its not like I'm poor and I still feel people should get these rebates. I don't believe in letting people suffer, and obviously someone in congress agrees with me because as long as you pay SS taxes you're getting money back. There are a lot of people in this country who work minimum wage jobs so that someone else can be a millionaire, those are the people who need 1200 the most bux. Chances are if you're family is making 150k a year you're well off, they need money too, but as much as the people working for 5.85? Absolutely not in my mind. I guess I'm just different because my parents employed a lot of people making 6.50-7.00 at one point(that was generous considering the industry) and I saw the way they lived, all the while my parents were banking.

Well this is better then the last time. Last time I didnt get one because I was claimed as a dependent. That was some bullshit that I did not get one because I was paying taxes just as well as the next person. Hopefully this actually happens.
How exactly is this going to help us. From my knowledge this will give a quick burst to the economy but then fall off quickly. Why dont we have something done to Taxes that will actually help over a longer period of time rather then on average IMO 3-6 months.

Rebate should be if you have paid in, it implies you were overcharged and are owed some money. Obviously, the more you put in, the more you should get back out, since IN THEORY, we are supposed to all contribute to the running of the government.
If your not paying anything in, and your getting a handout, just call it a handout so we can all be fine with it. Sucks for those who are 'over the limit'. if your paying taxes on that much, your in the top 3% of taxpayers in the country. So much for 'tax cuts for the rich', eh?
If you look at how much of our national economy these days is tied up in Government spending, it actually makes a lot of sense to remove some of that money from that cycle, and re-inject it back into the public sector.
Just so we are all clear, people don't work minimum wage jobs so someone else can be a millionaire. People become millionaires by building a company that can provide jobs (minimum wage and others too). Jobs, which are available for folks who have no other marketable skills, and jobs that if they weren't there would result on those same people starving to death in the streets, instead of having a roof over their heads and food on the table.
The biggest problem I have with your post is that it reeks of 'guilty rich guy' syndrome. I'm not saying don't help people or give them their tax money back, but it's a foolish man that sacrifices everything for a neighbor who wouldn't do the same for him, and lacks the ability to anything more than take everything you have, with no hope of giving any back.
Again, It's GOOD to help people out as much as you can, but not to the point that your borrowing money to do it. (which is exactly where we are, with the government doing so much charity work)

Paying off debt is getting caught up from previous spending.
Putting it in savings means someone else will use the money to stimulate the economy.
If we could just get our government to tighten their belts and spend less money than they take in, this transfer of money back to the people would probably be more helpful.

Answer me this:
Why do you think its OK for people who dont put ANYTHING into our society to get free money?
And by anything...I mean NOTHING. They dont pay taxes, they dont contribute to the overall wealth and education of society, they do no charitable work.
They sit around all day and wait for something to come to them...or they are involved in illegal activities.
Why is it OK for them to get free money from the government?

In capitalism we need people to work for minimum wage jobs, its just the way it is. I don't think thats a founding idea or the basis of capitalism but if you look around thats how it is. I'm not trying to guilt anyone, I've lived a privileged life and don't feel bad about it, but on the same note I try and look out for those who weren't so fortunate.

Well pretend the airplane is our economy headed for disaster, you are a passenger(taxpayer w/money savings), the stimulus plan is the safety instruction card, and the rebate checks are the drop down oxygen masks to keep everyone docile:thumb:
TYLER
"If you are seated in an emergency exit row...", yeah..." and you feel you would be unable or unwilling to perform duties listed on safety card, please ask a flight attendant to reseat you."
Jack turns to see TYLER. Tyler is reading a safety INSTRUCTION CARD.
JACK
It's a lot of responsibility.
Tyler turns to Jack.
TYLER
Wanna switch seats?
JACK
No, I'm not sure I'm the man for that particular job.
TYLER
An exit-door procedure at 30.000 feet. Mm-hmm. The illusion of safety.
JACK
Yeah, I guess so.
TYLER
You know why the put oxygen masks on planes?
JACK
So you can breathe.
TYLER
Oxygen, gets you high. In a catastrophic emergency, we're taking giant, panicked breaths...Suddenly you become euphoric, docile, you accept your fate.
Tyler points to passive faces on the drawn figures, from the INSTRUCTION CARD.

If you make under I think 20k you get it all back at the end of the year. Meaning what ever Uncle Sam took, he gives right back. I'm not sure what the annual income is but it's pretty low.
Did you just call me a racist?:really?:

[QUOTE=Gunz4Sale;7828400]SO yah I did KNOW that. The original plan before the compromise wasnt including people who made 3k or less. It was just those who paid FED TAX. The democrats went in and got the other people involved just today. So maybe read more is the message of this post.
Nice try but yes it did include them.
Keep your check, Don't practice what you preach.
According to MSNBC
Bush had supported larger rebates of $800-$1,600, but his plan would have left out 30 million working households of people who earn paychecks but don't make enough to pay income tax, according to calculations by the Urban Institute-Brookings Institution Tax Policy Center. An additional 19 million households would receive only partial rebates under Bush's initial proposal.
Now notice it doesn't mention anything about those who merely pay SS tax. If you would have had 0 federal withholdings you weren't getting a check. Now under the revised compromise version if you pay SS tax you get a check. Whats so difficult to understand?

They already cut the deal by the time you posted the first time, They all have to make speaches and showboat in front of the public so everyone can take credit.
Atleast donate part of your check to a poor kid, their smile will be worth a lot more.

That's why I hate democratic ways of thinking. Force people to give up their money, give it to big govt and let then redistribute it to the poor as they see fit(after taking a big wet bite out of it of course).
Young people now who are paying into the system of SS won't have anything by the time they retire. So why not opt out now and trust people to take care of themselves and cut spending to take care of those who are dependent on SS now? I don't expect the govt to take care of me when I am old. That's my responsibility.

you really think so?
i seem to remember recently a bunch of low income families/minorities abusing the help FEMA gave them. do you remember? i think they called themselves "victims" of some sort of natural disaster. the stories and PROOF from records shown what the debit cards were used on, proves they didnt care much about groceries and heat.
wrd...my buddy was telling me he saw them all over the galleria going crazy buying shit. 2K on gucci, lv, tvs and other bullshit. But hey...its not like they had to pay rent for a couple of years.
I'd be nice if I got unexpected $. It would be a nice surprise. Probably go blow it and treat myself to a shopping spree. Stimulate the economy ftmfw :thumb:

Looks like the Senate changed some of the parameters of the tax rebates.
It could go to the Senate floor Wednesday night or Thursday.
The Senate version originally included no income ceiling.
But committee leaders changed their minds Wednesday, capping eligibility at $150,000 for individuals and $300,000 for couples after Democrats objected to the idea of giving a rebate to wealthy Americans.
During Wednesday's committee meeting, Chairman Max Baucus of Montana announced that the proposal is similar to a bill passed Tuesday by the House.
But some key differences include the eligibility caps, which are double those in the House version.
The Senate proposal calls for rebate checks of $500 for individuals, $1,000 for couples and $300 per child to filers with at least $3,000 income -- less than the $600 for individuals and $1,200 for couples in the House bill.
The Senate bill also allows Social Security income to count for earned income, a move that would add about 20 million senior citizens to the list of those who would get rebates. It would also offer rebates to 250,000 disabled veterans who wouldn't qualify for them under the House plan.

Income tax doesn't go to roads and public services. Those are mostly paid for by property tax, and other state taxes.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The fate of $600-$1,200 rebate checks for more than 100 million Americans is in limbo after Senate Democrats failed Wednesday to add $44 billion in help for the elderly, disabled veterans, the unemployed and big business to the House-passed economic aid package.
Republicans banded together to block the $205 billion plan from advancing Wednesday, leaving Democrats with a difficult choice either to quickly accept a House bill they have said is inadequate or risk being blamed for delaying a measure designed as a swift shot in the arm for the lagging economy.
The tally was 58-41 to end debate on the Senate measure, just short of the 60 votes Democrats would have needed to scale procedural hurdles and move the bill to a final vote. In a suspenseful showdown vote that capped days of partisan infighting and procedural jockeying, eight Republicans - four of them up for re-election this year - joined Democrats to back the plan, bucking GOP leaders and President Bush, who objected to the costly add-ons.

Senior administration officials said the Internal Revenue service will start working to implement the rebate check program as soon as the final details are reached and will not wait for the president to sign the bill. Officials said checks could be sent to millions of Americans this spring.

Do I have to pay the rebate back?
No. And here's why.
Your rebate is a one-time tax cut - an advance on a credit you'll receive on your 2008 return.
It's based on your 2007 income initially. If it turns out that your 2008 income and number of children would have qualified you for a larger rebate than the one you received, you'll be sent the difference. If it turns out your 2008 income was lower than in 2007 and you should have gotten a lower rebate, you get to keep the difference.
"If you were supposed to receive a larger payment than you did, you will get the extra money," said Treasury spokesman Andrew DeSouza. "If you received more than what you should have gotten, you will not be penalized."
