i got married on feb. of last year (07) and i was wondering if i should file by myself or if i should do it with my wife? are there any tax breaks? would it even matter? if any of you married folks wanna give your input on what ya did, id 'preciate it.

I've always filed my taxes with my boyfriend as we were "married". I was told by someone that we would get more money back together.

i usually find that there isn't substantial difference between the two since we both work. i usually use turbo tax or something similar and do it both ways and they usually end up being pretty close. i am by no means a CPA so take it for what its worth.

It's going to depend mainly on which tax bracket you fall under as individuals and combined. Impossible to tell without knowing how much you make.

Also, go to www.irs.gov (http://www.irs.gov) and look up your tax bracket in the tax table. It will show you how much you should have paid individually and combined. If you are filing 1040EZ, the difference between what you actually paid on your W2 and what is in the tax table is what you should approximate get back. See if there is a big difference between you filing individually and combined and go from there.
If you are doing itemized deductions, that's a little bit more complicated. I was going to do 1040EZ without claiming education deduction but I would have only gotten about $500 back. With itemized deduction I'm getting $1500.
If you're not sure, check with an accredited tax preparer. For the love of god don't go to H&R Block. I could have prepared my bf's brother's tax return for free. He went to H&R block and paid $60. :gonk:

But if you file together you just pay once instead of twice if you do it seperatly.

It changes your income tax bracket. For instance, a single person making $60k/yr gets taxed at a higher percentage than a married couple with that same household income. Deductions help a lot, too. The key to a bigger refund is to get your taxable income to a lower tax bracket.

by law you need to do it together
I tried filing yesterday and it said since congress didnt pass the tax codes in time, no refunds til the end of feb.
this only affects some people, if you are claiming school credits form 8863, child care, tuition you wont be able to efile till february 11

I'm assuming there's some type of exemption or claim you have that its referring to. You might as well go to H&R block or something

TegTeg is right.
By law you may only file as
Married filing jointly
Married filing single
Married filing single is setup in such a way that it will always generate a worse answer than married filing jointly
