Another world record has fallen at this year’s Nardo high-speed knock out with Germany’s Brabus and its SV12 S powered Maybach 57 entering the record books as the maker of the world’s fastest and most exclusive ultra-luxury sedan. The twin-turbo V12 powered saloon reached a top speed of 205.2mph (330.6km/h), beating Brabus’ own 2005 record of 195mph (314km/h).
To reach these lofty speeds, the uprated SV12 S powerplant delivers an amazing 730hp (537kW) and an electronically controlled torque figure of 1,100Nm (811lb-ft). Without the aid of the electronic management, the boosted engine would develop up to 1,320Nm (974lb-ft) of twisting force and subsequently fry the rest of the drivetrain in the process.
For the power increase, engineers developed a special crankshaft with longer stroke, precision-balanced piston rods and larger pistons to account for the increased cylinder bore. This also sees displacement of the V12 engine increase to 6.3L from the standard 5.5L. The inner workings of the engine are modified with precision-machined cylinder heads and special camshafts, and a new turbocharger set-up and stainless-steel exhaust system is also added.
This same engine also set the speed record for street-legal sedans of 227.2mph (365.7km/h) when equipped in a Mercedes CLS, a record that still stands today.
The exterior of the car remains almost stock expect for the addition of new lightweight alloys, a lowered ride height and optional daytime running lights.
