View Full Version : Two-year wait for Mazda 2 MPS

Hot hatch fans will have to wait at least two years for a go-faster version of the new Mazda 2.

Officially, the Japanese manufacturer says a 2 MPS could be made, but has no plans for a high-powered range-topper for the supermini.

However Mazda UK is lobbying hard to make the car a reality.

'Britain is a hot-hatch market,' said Mazda UK's marketing director, Mark Cameron. 'We can make a good business case for the car, but it's not part of the product plan for the next 18 months.'

If the car does get the green light, it will wear the MPS badge which Mazda reserves for its high-performance models. Expect a turbocharged version of the 2's 1.5-litre engine putting out around 170bhp.

'Because the 2 is lighter than most superminis, that kind of output would be enough to make it one of the best performing hot hatches on the road,' said Cameron.

By the time the MPS could arrive, Mazda 2 range will already have expanded beyond the current choice of three models. A diesel arrives in December, and the three-door goes on sale in May.

wrd. Japanese and US car makers seem to be incapable of bringing out a truely sexy hatch over here. Honda came close but kind of left us hanging.

Shit, even the Aveo has a 2dr sport version in practically every other market.

most people dont like hatches

I don't think that is entirely true. I think that is what a lot of car manufactures want us to think. I am a firm believer that hatch sales eat into the SUV market. A lot of hatches and wagons have just as much room as a mid-size SUV but cost half the price and get twice the fuel economy. If car companies were to advertise them as such (and I mean REALLY advertise them) - it might actually be the end of the reign of the SUV in America. But that is bad business for oil and auto... so it will probably never happen.

Just my opinion. Not reading any statistics. I still think it is a marketing thing.

I like how the article says "go-faster" implying that the 2 is already fast.
