I've been having problems with my rotator cuff for about a year now, it started when my total amount of weight of what I can bench press went up, and it was only a slight discomfort some of the time. In January of this year, I started to box more often and then it really started to bother me.

I've tried getting it massaged, buying a new mattress, and doing dumbbell weights instead of barbell, and it doesn't hurt as much, but it's still there.

I am going to try to get a MRI soon to see whether it is torn or not, but do you think there is anything you can do or recommend me to do to either heal it or make the pain go away. Because right now I am trying to work around it, and I get a pain every now and then.

Thank you,

Dario

well, you'd have to do a specific battery of tests to isolate and individually test the integrity of your rotator cuff. in what motions does it hurt?

if it hurts bring your arm forward and above your head or bringing your arm up, bending your elbow so your forearm is across your chest and further turning your arm in, this may indicate impingement of a tendon in your rotator cuff. (i know it's hard to imagine, which is why you should go to a doctor) if it only hurts when you do a throwing motion or raise your arm up above the plane of your shoulder, it may be supraspinatus bursitis.

you haven't given a very good description of your complaint, but going to an orthopedic surgeon or even a primary care doc should allow you to figure out your problem.

unless your problem involves a tendon being out of place or your shoulder being out of socket or something, a chiropractor won't help. if you're getting an MRI for it, i assume you're going to see a doctor, in which case there are plenty of solutions prior to surgery, primarily rest, physical therapy, or certain medications to decrease the inflammation, among many others.

All i know is i dislocated my shoulder a couple times it was painful for about a year but not intolerable, then I got in a motorcycle wreck and finished it off. I couldnt continue working out it was so painful. I went to a doctor and was told my shoulder was completely torn up, every single tendon was repaired........and the result almost 2 years after the surgery....

it still hurts all the time.

Shoulder injuries suck.

better to have a chance at having it fixed or back to normal activities than to live with an unstable, unusable shoulder.

and yea, if every tendon in your shoulder is ripped, that's 4 tendons that need to heal, which means more chances of residual pain and restriction. the only thing you can do is strengthen the joint and maintain/increase your range of motion and that may help reduce pain.

i tore my rotator cuff fall of 04. b4 then, i had never had any type of back/neck pain. that hurt so bad, it didn't heal right because i took it out of the sling b4 i was supposed to (VERY dumb, i know.)

while the pain was bad, it was tolerable, until i got in a car accident may 05, and my spine was shifted. the pain resulting from the various things that got messed up due to the wreck not only hurts, but triggers unbearable migraines over twice as often as i used to get them b4 the wreck. those 2 things combined put me in pain that since then has been permanent, only going away a few times after very long, deep massages. not only did the pain leave, but when im not in pain im a totally different person. pain is a motherfker. now i have to go through things like massage therapy, acupuncture, chiropractor visits, etc. to make the pain leave.

point of this is: GET IT FIXED NOW. don't let it get to a point where the pain affects your whole life, and makes you (and those around you), miserable.
