V8 Acura in the works
Posted Dec 11th 2006 8:09AM
It's been speculated for some time that sales of Acura's luxo-barge offerings may be hindered by the automaker's lack of offering V8 power. According to Automotive News, this problem may be remedied soon.
In an interview with Honda's president of R&D in the States, Hirohide Ikeno, he hinted that a new direction for Acura powerplants would debut at the upcoming Detroit auto show in January.
"I'm pushing for it," he said. "That is our direction." Acura is often criticized for not offering V8 engines with any of its cars. Ikeno said V8s are only being considered for Acura, and none would appear in the Honda lineup.
It's already been confirmed that the new NSX, due in 2009, will likely get a mid-ship V10, drawing credibility from Honda's 8- and 12-cyclinder racing mills. That kind of power is necessary in the supercar market and a V8 option is a necessity if an automaker hopes to compete with other luxury sedans.

It's been a long time coming.

Good find Al! It is about time Honda made a damn V8; they've had them for a hell of a long time in IRL and now Formula 1 so these should be impressive. Let's hope that there is some torque in these engines though...

^ You make a scary realization that Honda will most likely shoot for economy as opposed to power. In my opinion, if the RL has a chance against the GS 430, M series from Infiniti and ANY BMW with a V8, it has to be at least 375-425 HP otherwise it is pointless. This is America, put in some displacement and power, if you are buying a $50K+ luxury car you can afford the gas.

they better not make it V8 + FWD

well honda technology could acctually make this v8 really freaking powerful
think about it
honda has four cylinders that makes as much power as chevy and ford v-6's
they have 6 cyclinders that make as much as ford and chevy v-8s
so maybe this thing will get some damn power

You make a very good point, see the F20 and F22 S2K engines as an example. This will have to go through a RWD or AWD platform though and the SH AWD Transaxle may not handle that kindo of power without it being made stronger (400+ FWHP).

your missing the point here, now compare their tq ratings and that really tells the differance. Every body likes to shout out hondas small displacement hp numbers but forget about tq. The reason people get V8 tq down low. Most lux drivers are not going to accel to 7-8 rpm to get maxium power.

the honda/mugen V8 which was stuck in a prototype mugen legend made 590 hp NA...
Layout: 90 degree V8 Naturally Aspirated
Displacement: 4000cc
Horsepower: 590hp / 9500rpm
torque: 383lb/ft / 7500rpm
Restrictor: 33.4mm x2 or 46.8mm x1
Clutch: Carbon 4 plate
length: 559mm
width: 720mm
height: 577mm
weight: 131kg
Lets hope we see some serious power

as nice as it would be to see 590 i don't see them doing that just because of cost reasons really, but then again, i don't know what market they're aiming for, if it's for the M5's, Infiniti M sedans, Big body lexus' then maybe something close to that but seeing as it's a V8 the power output can't be less than i'd hope at least mid 300's.....

look at the reasons why they want to start using v8 motors. why would they bother using a v8 if it put out less than great numbers? those of you assuming the v8 will output shitty numbers are retarded.
