Nissan says it's putting an emphasis on affordable performance with the introduction of its new-generation Sentra SE-R.
The original SE-R, launched in 1991, helped propel Nissan to the head of the sport compact segment-the segment often referred to as "rice burners" by fans and foes alike. The second-generation car fell short of sales expectations and failed to live up to the reputation of the original version, which graced many ten-best lists.
The third-generation SE-R will go on sale next March, in base and Spec-V trim. The latter version makes 200 horsepower with its 2.5-liter in-line four by using special features such as a unique resin intake manifold and dual branch exhaust manifold; revised piston crown shape to support a higher, 10.5:1 compression ratio; iridium tipped spark plugs for improved combustion; and a revised cam shaft profile, reinforced connecting rods and an eight-counterweight crankshaft.
The "base" SE-R makes 177 hp. It's anyone's guess how young, mostly male buyers will react to Nissan's decision to equip the SE-R with a continuously variable transmission. Bosley defended the move, insisting "CVTs are not just for smoothness and fuel economy - they can be tuned for performance also."
I think I may take a serious look at this, thoughts?
saw that a few days ago.
the interior has a major facelift. the exterior im personally not a big fan of. the motor claims to push out 200HP, but thats a farcry from the 180 the QR25DE used to push out on the previous gen. that compression doesnt help at all w/ Forced induction IMO.
im sure its a great car for what it is though.

I'm not really feeling the front end. The horsepower predictions seem nice though. The lights do resemble a 350Z from that angle.

Good link alf!
Thanks!
I can tell the exterior is going to be hate it or love it. I for some reason think it looks pretty cool. I think I will buy 1 this summer. That will give me a few months to get some actual customer reviews.

i know it went down hill after the b13. but i think this one actually has some potential the body isnt too great but the interior is nice and lush for the under $20K price tag.
would i buy one? possibly.
alf
also, from the articles ive been reading the redline is supposed to be 6600, but still in the pics it shows 6200. like the older gen.

For $20k you could have a RWD 350Z. Wrd.

paddle shifter for the SE-R auto.
RWD 350z used yea, but this is more for people that dont like to pay such a high insurance premium.

what are u talking about??? 10.5:1 is prefect for F-I, u can run 8psi boost to hit over 300whp = priceless...
personal, i actually like the front end little more than the 04-06s, and looks like the inside is bigger than the older gen... I might get one 08 for daily, then add some basic bolt ons to make 200WHP all motor.... The 05-06 spec v stock make 155whp which is 20 less than Crank hp, and the compression ratio is somewhere in the 9s :1, so i am pretty sure the new 10.5:1 cp qr25de should easy hit 175-180whp stock...

man that exterior is fat and boxy looking. prev gen is def much better looking. they tried that high short trunk 2 gens ago and it was a failure and now it looks like theyre bringing it back.

What....The....Fuck
did nissan do to the exterior?
its fucking hideous, like a cross between a echo and a fusion with 350z head lights and altima rear lights.
i personally think they fucked it up cosmetics wise....interior its all good except for the placement of the shifter.
i never understood that, it just looks/feels weird with it way the hell up there and angled.
engine = good going. that i like, id rather buy a 05 and swap that engine/transmission in there.
i thought high compression was bad for big turbo, and low was the way to go. the older gen was 9.5:1

All I got to say is the best sentra SER ever produced were teh classic 91-94 generation, anything after that is Garbage.

i like it, especially in the yellow. the interior looks nice and its about time they changed the exterior. I think that its a good upgrade to the old SE-R.

High compression can work with a turbo, but not with high boost. Using low boost with a small turbo and high compression can actually be fun; it makes for a very responsive package that can feel like you just have a bigger NA engine.
If you run high boost, you need lower compression ratios. Compressing the air/fuel mix too much will make it ignite early before the spark plugs even fire. It's called predetonation, and uncontrolled ignition like that is bad news.

so the only transmission option is a CVT? no 6mt?

The Spec-V gets 200hp and the 6mt.

I like this car alot , used to own a 2005 spec v that was totaled , this is coming out in 07 so in 08 I might get one if they aren't to many problems. The interior is a hell of alot better and 200hp is a nice starting point. Higher compression , more aggressive cams , plastic intake mani , the whole bottom end is different, revs to 7k now instead of 6200 , has an oil pressure gauge and g meter stock. If they can maintain the selling price or stay under 20k it will be a good bang for your buck.

copycats
Please get rid of the QR dammit.

High compression is bad for a small turbo. Bigger turbos are more efficient and generate less heat than a smaller turbo, so long as they keep the boost down and there is a good quench area in the cylinder head, everything should be gravy.
But still, they're extracting more power from one of Nissan's most unreliable engines ... thumbs down!
i know!! i hope they dont have those thin fucking rods. thats what killed me when i was running the turbo on my old QR.
