yeah, some of them are speed, and some of them can vary on dependability and lifetime... If you just get a cheap generic brand, it could be slower than a name brand and also, lifetime may be shorter.

there are some third party brands that i would trust one of them being kingston. the rest is san disk extreme III and lexar proz for me.
this is a very good resource if you care that much to see the times and what not. http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007

youve got the speed as mentioned.. like from Sandisk which i know well of since igts what i use.. as wel as most photographersi know, Ultra II Extreme III and now wiht the Extreme IV which is about to come out or already did... the higher the amount higher speeds... with an Ultra II youll be good tho.. we've tested a regrular CF on a 30d compared to a CF ultra II and it does help a lot... same goes for Lexar and other brand cards..

unless you are shooting sports or high speed action you can get away with an Ultra II (40-66x speeds)

I just bought a 512mb SanDisk. Just for my camera, howlong will this thing last?

forever unless you break it in half.
when I used to teach classes, people would ask how fragile flash memory was and I would take one of my personal cards and throw it across the room at a window. CF memory is not fragile, ive even sent mine through the washer and had it come out fine.

the only problem ive seen with the CF cards, are actually damaging the camera due to people forcing them pretty roughly into the cam.. pretty much bending or even breaking the prongs inside... other than that, its a tough card... havent done or heard much to the level of xnerox but from what i see, he knows his stuff, and hoenstly wouldnt doubt that itd be that tough..
