It doesn't matter what you buy. It's the skill that matters. Pick up the XT or something and just use it to get started. Then if you can justify to yourself that you need the upgrade, then proceed to do it.

are you stupid?
are you?
uhhh, no. why would you save to get a 1ds, for your first camera. even if you didn't want to get the rebel as your first camera, a 20d or 30d would not be a "crappy" camera to "hold you back"

i'm a beginner and i bought the canon rebel xt/350d not long ago. the camera is easy to use and it takes great pics. so if you are in the same boat as me i suggest you buy this one but, hey its your $$$$ and you spend it on which ever one you like. good luck with the purchase and enjoy.
here are some pics i took with my rebel xt.

rebel xt is a great cam to start out with... my experience has been very simple with it... IMO easier than nikon.. but to each his own on that topic... D70s on B&H is at $979 here at work i have the rebel xt at $759 on sale... if you wanted to go a little cheaper and get a sweet lens later on, the D50 i have for sale at $699 (best buy by the way is where i work)
