View Full Version : My new LS swap project (BUILD THREAD!)

dantheman

Working on building a drag toy with an LS swap and eventually a turbo. Here begins the thread for it. my hope is to have the project running and driving for ~3000 and im on pace to meet those numbers. with turbo stuff i expect to be closer to 8k. im following the sloppy mechanics dont bs me build nearly to a T.

Picked up this 01 suburban for 300 bux and 120 to tow it home. unfortunately it had been the victim of arson... According to the old timer that i bought it from, his 19yr old grand son drove the burb over and parked it blocking access to the back of their property. He asked him to move the truck and this was the most insulting thing the teen had ever heard so in defiance he set the interior on fire. upside is the fire department was fast and put it out before it spread too far and the 5.3 under the hood appears to be in perfect condition which is good for me cause thats the only piece i want.

heres a progress pic i started stripping stuff off the front last night this was before i went in for dinner. After i came back out i got about 30 minutes and it started to rain so i had to hurriedly clean up and run in.
https://i.imgur.com/r2Jc9Tn.jpg?1

got the rad out, trans cooler lines disconnected, a lot of the hoses off, clutch fan off etc. hoping to go ham on it tonight and get the rest of it out and maybe the motor out. ill snap more pics as i am working on it and ill probably grab my gopro and do some timelapse stuff of me working on it.

Don't these suburbans come with LM motors? The LS is a 5.7 #chevynoob

i mean "technically" the LS motors are the LS1/2/3/4/6/7/9 and are aluminum blocks in displacements from 5.3 (ls4) to 7.0 (ls7), the physical block size is the same between all of these and the differences are in bore/stroke/rod length. however the LM7 (5.3) and LR4 (4.8) that come in the burb as well as the LQ4/9 (6.0) and other designations are all based off the same architecture. parts interchange between them and they share a lot of part numbers. the difference being the majority of the truck/suv blocks are iron not aluminum.

so LS motor covers all of it in a broad sense.

Like I said i'm a chevy noob, I guess most peeps that do swaps just say what car it came from and you'd know what engine it had. But carry on, looks like a great donor.

Like I said i'm a chevy noob, I guess most peeps that do swaps just say what car it came from and you'd know what engine it had. But carry on, looks like a great donor.

yea pretty much. the reason its a 3 digit code is because of the RPO codes that GM uses to denote options. LM7 is the 5.3 iron block engine code. ly6 l33 lr4 lq9 l98 etc etc they have LOTS of them. 97-04/05 is "gen3 small block chevy" and 05-15 is gen4. the LT based motors in teh new trucks/vettes/camaro etc are all gen5 stuff.

gen3 and gen4 a LOT of the stuff interchanges. heads, intake manifolds (as long as port shape is same), exhaust manifolds etc. its all legos honestly. ill probably end up using the factory GTO exhaust manifolds on this for the first iteration because the stock truck ones have the airpump shit and i dont want to deal with it.

He bought a rare, low mileage glass top CRX to cut up. I’ve seen it, the car is clean. It’s like the owner bought it new and drove it back and forth to the grocery store each week and that’s it.

Have a l98 or l9h depending on where you read. But I must say, these big Chevy motors make car 6k lb SUV move quicker than it should. I hear they handle boost well, which makes me itch for a supercharger. But I'll probably just buy a newer car so I don't have to worry about maintenance, as my car is just about to reach 100k miles.

its supposedly 200k miles. cant tell the guages and stuff are burned.

for the cats i cut them out so if you needed them for this application they wouldnt be ideal but if you just wanted to buy them id need to look at what they are worth.

whatever parts you need get at me and we can talk.

Its a 99 V6 Auto car originally. cloth interior but power everything. A friend of mine got it new in 99 and drove it until 2011 when he sold it to another friend who pulled the motor and was going to terminator swap it but ended up having a kid. Its sat since then and he finally asked me if i wanted to buy it since i was eyeballing mustang chassis's for this build i wanted to do. We made a deal and here it is.

Already has a GT 8.8 under it with 4.10 gears and came with lots of extras including some mosier 31 spline chromolly axles.

Going to test fit with the bare aluminum block i have to see if i am going to need an oil pan or not (i think im going to) and then slam the cam/valve springs into the motor and get it ready to drop in place. i think im going to end up needing to hammer the trans tunnel out a bit but ill find out once i start test fitting stuff. excited to get to work.

not a ton of progress due to some personal issues going on this month. Im trying to devote an hour a day to SOMETHING on the project since ill be traveling a bit for work this month and wont have as many weekends. i have the last week and a half off and planning on going hard on it to get some progress done.

last night i got the motor mostly buttoned up and ready to go into the chassis.

the oilpan was off, the waterpump needed new gaskets and the crank pulley needed back on.
https://i.imgur.com/dWLV06M.jpg?1

got all those buttoned up and cleaned off the intake manifold mounting surfaces.
https://i.imgur.com/XJSzHWh.jpg?1

not a ton of work but some none the less.

i also pulled a 4l60 bellhousing that i had and slapped it onto the testfit block in the chassis. Rigged the motor to the core support so it doesnt lean back on the mounts as much and i could remove the wood block i had under the oilpan holding it up. Tonight im getting it up on jackstands so i can get under it and assess the tunnel situation and do some measures to see if its going to work with the 4l80 or if i am going to need to do some hammering.

updates from over the weekend.

Saturday i efforted the exhaust stud removal again, this time with a tip from a guy on LS1tech using a flat washer to do a plug weld on then welding a nut to the washer to spin it out. Worked fantastic. Got 2 of 3 out saturday night and ran out of washers and nuts. im still learning to weld proficiently and blew through the washer a couple times. Doat got a couple action shots.

Reading helps brah...

We made a deal and here it is.

dantheman
12-13-2017, 07:34 AM
its not a ton of trouble spence. plus im working with junkyard parts here so i wanted to validate that they all work before i drop a TON of coin into it.

ive got about 2500 tied up in this whole shebang right now. expecting to be right around 3000 for a running driving, swapped mustang. cam only itll still be a quick car, im figuring deep 12s. which would have it running nearly door to door with my GTO. the whole idea behind the project is spend money only where i have to for each step. like by all accounts i should do a torque convertor and shiftkit in the transmission but again, i dunno if they work. i was told they did by the seller, but no guarantee on that. so small money into stuff at at time.

Swapped the manual pedal assembly for the auto one tonight and removed the auto shifter cable from the tunnel. Started eyeballing how the underhood harness goes. Installed a prndl switch into the 80e and removed the bit of cut cable that was on it. About an hour or so messing around with it getting things done a bit at a time.

one downside of the hooker mounts i dont have pics of is now my camaro exhaust manifolds are all up into the steering shaft on the drivers side and kmember on the passenger side so im going to need to cut the flanges off and zap some pipe onto it to get it out of the engine bay. but the engine being away from the firewall is worth it.

after some test fitting, i think i decided im going to have to use the LS6 manifold i have on my shelf instead of the truck manifold and switching to a different water pump and buying an alternator mount from somewhere to bring it lower. it could work with a 4+ inch cowl but in what id spend finding a cowl hood thatll clear ill probably end up cheaper getting a waterpump and a bracket for the alt and a fuel rail.

amgine
12-18-2017, 09:58 AM
it looks good! weird seeing a LS in there though. Why the manifold change? height clearance?

yea the top of the truck manifold is about 3-4 inches higher than the hood line... lol the alternator is up there too. i had a feeling in the back of my mind that this would be the case but i was hoping that i might be ok. unfortunately not.

looks like 50 for a crank pulley, 85 for a waterpump, 70 for a bracket and then ill need an idler pulley to get the fbody accessories on it and then my problems for height are solved.

Unfortunately i didnt have much time over the holidays to work on the car. Had some family issues that needed attention and pulled me away from this.

got in the Camaro accessories and once it warms up a bit ill be back out working on it again. Waiting on the dirty dingo alt bracket i got to show up and the ebay seller shipped me a media blasting guidebook lol. They are correcting the issue but that was one of those WTF moments when i opened the package.

i also saw the sale from Jegs on the hooker turbo manifolds and crossover pipe. went ahead and ordered those and ill be running just one downpipe off of it and running it NA through these until i get the turbo stuff sorted out.

https://i.imgur.com/igjeEWJ.jpg?1

sub frame connectors on the way. going to use these to anchor my trans mount to so im not using the floorpan as a mounting solution. once they arrive and i get them installed i can get the 80e into the tunnel and start building the mounts for it.

been working on getting the cars wiring harness back into the engine bay and laid out where it needs to be then im going to start grafting the truck harness into the bay as well. planning on running both until going turbo then im going to switch to a standalone harness. i have the full truck harness and fuse block so im just going to set it up in the bay and make it work. wont be the prettiest but itll get the thing running.

Yup my Milwaukee cordless ratchet is my favorite tool in my shop. 35ft/lbs perfect for any nut or bolt. And it takes a serious beating. I tighten with the electronic ratchet and then use the handle to give it a few extra ft/lbs and the tool doesn't care at all.
