View Full Version : Miata Swap
Everyone sneers at the miata because it's relatively slow.
Here are some specs on it, after an interesting motor swap:
12.5 second 1/4 pass, traction limited
53/47 weight distribution (same as the ae86)
0-60mph in 4.5-4.8 seconds, traction limited
all of this on a bone stock transplanted motor, and the motor responds extremely well to modification
Total price, including the cost of the car, comes in under $10,000
For the price, it's pretty decent, I'd say.

I dont think miatas are slow..they are great autoX cars and are pretty good for a 4cy....where is Stan when you need him?

sounds liek a 13b swap.
miatas are cool but when you get lotsa power the chassis needs reinforcing.
a hardtop usually helps...as does a roll cage put in there...funny thing is noone thinks much of a yatta with a cage...they think its just for AutoX or something....might be a cool sleeper.
but then again so would an rx7 with a built block turbo miata motor :)

Not a 13b swap - that swap is far too much trouble. The output shaft is too high up on the motor for it to be a practical swap unless you've got too much money.
The hardtop in a miata is not structural at all. It's been proven that the thirty pounds or so it adds far outweigh the miniscule stiffness it adds. Miata track cars generally get hardtops because of drag, and for safety purposes. If you're stiffening up the car on the miata for higher power, a roll cage won't help much. Chassis braces and tube-frame replacements help.
A 13b rotary is capable of far higher power output, streetable, than the miata motor. Most miatas with high power output (over 300hp) use an FE3 block sourced from Kias, stroked and bored. There are a couple miatas pushing over 300whp on a stock block, but that's on race gas at 20+ psi.
edit: When I say a rollcage doesn't help, I mean that if you have enough power that you're going to start warping the miata itself, it's going to take a lot more than a roll cage. Roll cages do help stiffen up the stock miata, though, you're right. It just won't fix chassis twist if you've got enough power to cause that problem.

where do you get that from. Most 300+ rwhp miatas are using the BP engine. Only FE3 in a miata that has run at this point is my friends car. And several other people are in the process of getting FE3 miatas running.

and the FE3 swap is not a cake walk either. Lost of small issues have come up that people are trying to get around. Like the oil pan hangs very low. There is valve cover clearence issues, etc.
i read on a car website a miata is one of the ultimate gay cars haha
Most BP motors over 300 horsepower are using 100+ octane fuel, or have been stroked with forged internals. Race gas isn't streetable, and stroked and forged isn't stock. I'm referring to streetable motors, not track monsters or completely built motors.

actually thats wrong. They arent all stroked (there really arent any strokers kits. I think Boig might make one and FM is working on making one. I dont think anyone on the street is has done that) and alot are using stock internals. Plus you can make over 300 on premium. And be streetable.
here is what one of my friend sells as a kit
240 RWHP @ 10psi 310 RWHP @ 15psi (pump gas) stock internals.

i think you need to do a little research.

stan,
you beat me to it. I got laughed at by the rice boys at the local "spot" lastnight. Funny thing is my stock miata isnt all that slow compared to the mulititude of rice boys out there.
jb

MONSTER MIATA bwhahaha
put a 5 liter Ford V8 in those things and they haul ass.....
Pitlab: Yeah, look like I had my facts wrong.
Also, the motor with those numbers is, in fact, a monster miata. With a stock Ford 302 V8.

check your pm
A monster miata is only one done by Monster motorsports. All others are just V8 miatas.
