The latest study by J.D. power and associates shows that Lexus(as always), GM, and Ford are leading the pack in quality.

For the 11th consecutive year, Lexus ranked first in a major J.D. Power and Associates quality study. General Motors Corp. and Ford Motor Co. were tops in more than half the segments -- their best showing ever.

In fact, both GM and Ford had more high-ranked cars and trucks in individual segments than Toyota or Honda, and the Lincoln, Buick and Cadillac brands scored higher overall than Toyota.

The J.D. Power 2005 Vehicle Dependability Study was released Wednesday. It is based on surveys of 50,635 people who bought new vehicles in 2002 and kept them for three years.

"It was a strong showing for the domestics," said Chance Parker, executive director of product and research analysis at J.D. Power.

The Big Three still need more consistency -- that is, high quality in every model they build, Parker said. But the survey underscores what some in the industry have claimed for two or three years: The so-called gap in quality between U.S. and Japanese brands is largely one of perception.

The survey results were reported by brand and also by segment, such as compact cars, full-size cars and full-size pickups. Overall industry quality increased 12 percent in the long-term study, and Porsche and Hyundai showed the largest increases.

In individual segments, GM and Ford had the top-ranked vehicles in six of nine car categories and six of 10 truck categories.

I'm as surprised as the next guy to see this, but its some interesting and good news for some of the domestic owners on this forum.

Let them enjoy it while they can, hopefully in 6-8 years there will be no more Ford or GM.

Everything will be Japanese [Evil Laugh]

I highly doubt that. GM and Ford are invested in so much besides cars they can continue to lose the billions of dollars a year for another decade if they wanted to, and not even be worried about it.

GM and Ford's quality may be approaching those of the Japanese, but it's too little too late. their reputation is already severly tarnished. people who have previously owned or had experience with them are very timid to continue their relationship. it's going to take a lot for GM and Ford to change that image. they're going to need to rework the entire marketing and design departments to shift their focus on SUV's and Light Trucks to economical and inexpensive family cars.

There are a lot of mixed feelings about Ford and GM. I know some that will never buy them again, and I know some that won't buy ANYTHING but a Ford or GM. Its just a matter of who you talk to.

As for the reworking... *cough* Ford Fusion *cough cough* I would say that is a step in the right direction. As for GM... I dont like them, so I wouldnt know what their next move would be.

I would agree w/ the ford and lexus, but the GM? Every GM i've been in feels cheap, except for one, but it was a 94, so i'm pretty sure it wasn't tested. Even the C5 vettes felt cheap on the inside. Oh, well. I guess that's why i'm not the one running the tests...

This was a reliability test, not a "how soft the leather feels" test. Notice how Subaru is negative in the standings? Lol.

funny thing is though, that most dealership service writers dispise the way j d power conducts their surveying. it's way more vague than the way dealerships construct their tsi surveys... toyota doesn't even recognize j d power's reports as valid.
