Generation-change at the pinnacle of automotive engineering: Mercedes-Benz presents the new S-Class. The new luxury saloon will be appearing in the showrooms of company-owned outlets and authorised dealerships as of autumn 2005.

As in the preceding series, the new S-Class will introduce technical innovations which make the flagship Mercedes model an example for others to follow. Pioneering safety features and exemplary comfort continue to be the outstanding attributes of the S-Class. The new saloon also sets standards in driving dynamics with its agile handling, while offering even more driving pleasure with new, more powerful engines. The new S-Class is replacing a model series which is the world No. 1 in the luxury class, and of which around 485,000 have been produced since 1998.

Really now? I own a 2004 S430. I love it. When I bought this car, the last thing I thought about was how it looks. Dont make me explain this.
But this doesnt mean that i'm not into looks, this is why I have my other cars.
The S-class has never been the best looking car, the people that make it are not aiming to make it pretty. But yes, just because it's an S-class is worth buying if you can afford it.

Never said the looks are just for function, i just said they didnt mean to make it the prettiest of cars. This is Merc's flagship car, they wont cut corners with it. When it comes out, a lot of people will buy it, just like they have all the S-classes before it. Whether you think it's ugly or not, it sells a bunch, even with the high sticker price. Thats for a reason. And yes it will be parked in front at the country club and it wont look ugly.
Secondly, dont be rude. Because I'm familiar with these cars is not that big of a deal so quit with the personal attacks.

if you consider the general demographic they are targetting, if mercedes made the car look like an 80's volvo and put a high price tag on it, i'm willing to bet people will still flock to buy it. and you know what else? other car manufacturers will follow suit. particullarly because of the name and also because of the type of buyer they are.

the ones that have it, won't be bitching cause one of the reasons why they bought the car is, "because they can." it's like when you go to the store to pick out a bottle of wine. from what i understand the general rule of the thumb is, the more expensive the bottle, the better it is. same school of thought for most high end buyers. "well if this is more expensive, then that must mean this is better." that's not true some cases of course. but the high price on this car will be one of the reasons why mercedes will sell a lot.

here is another example. why do people buy HRE over iforged wheels? for the baller factor. both wheels are crap IMHO (too heavy, too soft, and too expensive) and both look the same. but people still buy HRE over Iforged because it's more "baller." same reason why this S will sell eventhough it looks like a ford taurus.

BWahahhahahhahahaha.... Acura isn't even considered a Tier 1 Luxury brand by the entire industry. There is simply no comparison.

Oh, and if it were my money, I would buy the Audi A8L over the Merc and BMW, no questions asked. :)

The new A8 is amazing i agree. My friend in London just bought one. Cant wait to tear it up this december.
I would pick it over any other merc or bimmer in it's category besides the S600 ^_^

Also for those interested, the new A8 is featured in the new movie Transporter 2 coming out on september 8....and yes they do take its performance features to the limit

people will only buy this car because it's a mercedes. when i first saw the pic, i thought it was reminiscent of other, cheaper cars. this one just looks poorly made adn designed. for one, the sides look like bmw 5-series. i think a mercedes shouldn't be first class in luxury and comfort but also styling. like someone else said, a mercedes, especially the s-class needs to look good pulling up anywhere.

also, i figured it out. the car reminds me of the new acura RL. i'd choose that over this anyday. better sportier styling with similar comfort at the expense of luxury, but then again for a $50k+ drop in price, i'd expect that.
