Man... that thing is a bitch to take off. Timing belt busted on me on the way home from Houston. I don't know if my valves survivd since I forgot to do a leakdown before I pulled the head. Anyways, what methods are yall using to take it off?
I have a 94 Honda Civic automatic. My electric impact doesn't work. I'm prolly going to take it to a friends who has air tools.

you gonna need an air gun for sure.... you can ditch that elec gun when it comes to hondas crank bolt.

when i said ditch the electric gun, i meant it litterally. meaning youre gonna need a really good air gun, preferably fresh gun rate at ~600lbft w/ a good amt of air supply to it.
if you dont wanna waste time tryin to pop it out, drive it to a nearby shop and tell them to pop it out for you and impact it just a bit and slowly drive it home.
btw, this is in the wrong forum. should be in maintenance

Put your socket and a good ratchet on it and hit the ratchet with a hammer a few times untill it breaks it loose.
Thats how I always do it.
Oh and use the hammer when u go to tighten it also.

get one of those pipe grabber chain deals
put it on the crank pully and turn until its braced against the frame. then take it off, or get the tool from honda to lock the crank.. you dont need an impact.. it makes it easier and faster.. but take the opportunity to get out of n00b status with your car..

OMG tell me your kidding. Whatever you do don't listen to this guy.
Shocking it might actually help breaking a tough ass bolt loose. I always use a 1/2" breaker bar and a long pole

i remember when some wannabe mechanic replaced the water pump and timing belt and left that shit loose.. so when i was coming home from the galleria the belts came loose and my battery light came on, and my steering wheel was fucking stiff... the threads inside the crankshaft were fucked up ..My uncle got me a new bolt since he works at a machine shop but it only lasted 2 days I just bought another engine
=/ Never try to save money

Yea like lamtran said you are going to need an impact that puts out some real power and a good supply of air.

if youre doin this w/ honda special tool(vashthastampe mentioned) to hold the crank pulley (~50bucks, btw). youre gonna need a long cheater (breaker) bar to pop it open, but this only work if youre on a lift. dont even try this shit on jack stand, tryin to pop it open might pull the whole car out of the jackstand and will cause injuries.
the best thing is to drive it to a nearby shop and let them open it and tip the dude 10-15 bucks.

i used 3/8" ingersoll rand impact gun. the titanium series though. worked like a charm. had no problem taking the crank bolt off.

the problem that ppl face on hondas are blue loktite used w/ the bolt and it holds really tight over time. urs prolly didnt use them.

impact wrench works for me every time. You need alot of air going to it and a heavy duty impact wrench. I know you can get a hand impact wrench looks like a normal portable drill but will take this bolt off no problem at Sears. Its like $250^ though. -Nick

And for everyone telling him to drive it some where and have them loosen it for him Read his post he has the head pulled off because his timing belt broke.

you can buy a special tool from the Snap-On guy designed specifically to take the crank pulley bolt off. It's around 60 bucks if i remember, though. It holds the crank pulley in place while you loosen the bolt.

theres a lot of methods ppl have use to pop crank bolts off. here are some others:
-lock piston by putting ropes down the chamber
-use starter as an impact tool
-lock flywheel at the starter
-some ppl also use heat b4 impacting it out
the only ones ive tried in the past is using impact and locking the flywheel

I use a 2.99 harbor freight strap wrench. That thing has paid for itself so many times over.

I bought me that special tool for the crank pulley bolt from Autoparts.com. it costed me like 35 bucks. It's a one hand man job now loosening and torque'n it down :)
