i guess this would go here. my speedo in my civic started freaking out today. its only dont it one other time a few months ago for like a minute or two. well it was pretty bad today. did it pretty much all the way from 249@45 to 59@bw8. speedo was bouncing all over the place and the odo wasnt counting right. about 2 miles before i got back to work the check engine light came on, but cleared and never came back as soon as i parked the car.

is my speed sensor going out? is this a common problem? any info is appreciated. tia

I had a similar problem with an eg hatch I just picked up.
The speed sensor had a few teeth missing/broken,but when I replaced it,the problem didnt get any better.
The problem turned out to be corrosion on the pins of the speedo sensor plug.
I'd take out the speedo and look for anything visible that could be a problem, and clean the pins at the speedo and at the harness plug.

well i messed with it today. i pulled the sensor and checked everything out. theres no obvious problems and the peg thing that goes into the trans seems to be in good shape with very little play. i cleaned the leads on the harness and sensor as best i could and put a dab of electric grease on there but neither helped. i guess the next thing to do would be to get my needle nose out and try and squeeze the female slots down some. hopefully its just a bad connection...

found the problem. middle prong was eroded and broke off at the base. the break was so low and clean it was difficult to see. its fixed temporarily untill i can get a new sensor
