View Full Version : 16g upgrade on 2g automatic
This is a walk through my little EVOIII 16G turbo upgrade on my 98 GST. I started it yesterday and this whole thread will take some time. I'm still waiting for parts to come in.
Parts ordered:
-TD05H-16G Turbo
-EVOIII 2g Install kit
-Greddy big core Intercooler Kit (backorder!!)
-Greddy RS Blow off valve
-O2 Housing
-Apex N1 Downpipe
-Walbro 255lph Fuel Pump
-PTE 550cc Injectors
-Fuel Pressure Regulator
-DSMLink
Waiting on:
-95 ECU Eprom (bidding on ebay... hahaha)
Parts arrived:
-None... puwahahaha
okay, so here's the project:
98 GST automatic with over 150,000 miles. I'm suprised the T-25 has even lasted this long!! APparently, the turbo blew out last week... when it tries to spoool... HUGE cloud of white smoke comes out the back. So if i'm going to replace something, might as well upgrade it huh?

Progress so far:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y45/DXRTT/IM000009.jpg
-Took off all the heat shields and unbolted the manifold and turbo... I've got tests and finals so i'm not working on it too hard... and also... no parts are in yet so... wish me luck DSM world!

you should have bought a stall converter, shift kit, and end clutches cause you are not going to be able to power brake the car with the 16g. I did the same on talon tsi auto and damm it sucked from a stop but from a roll it was a great upgrade. Another option is that you use your dsmlink with the anti-turblo lag. So that way you can spool the turbo right off the line which will kill the turbo if you always have it like that but I mean once in a while it should be ok. GOOD LUCK :thumb:

one thing you do need to buy is a cheap oil cooler and convert it to cool the tranny cuz that auto tranny will burn up happend to me. :thumb:

will you replace tranny too?!! 150K miles and you're about to put some good power down, the car may go fast but so will your tranny.

i'll probably have to wait for that thing to break :(

Yeah, it doesn't have an eprom, only the 95 does.
Funny story about the upper IC piping, i got the bigger kit and they said i didn't need the upper IC cuz it came with it? So i was like, "Umm... okay, whatever u say." so ya.

save the parts and save the money and do a 5-speed swap...auto tranny sucks and won't hold those upgrades for long
slow_talon
04-22-2005, 12:52 AM
Well I actually disagree the auto tranny is way better if you just beef up the internals. Its way better for track use (more consistent times) and long runs but its also a little boring sometimes. Well that's just my opinion.
the car's not running at all right now (T25 is BLOWN) so i'm just gonna go ahead and do all the mods and run the tranny till it breaks... If it aint broke don't fix it right? After the tranny goes, i'll figure out what to do with it but i really wont' be making that much power, i don't think... and i won't be driving it too hard so hopefully the tranny will hold until i can have more $$

well yeah that would be a different story . if he was going full out race that wouldn't be a such a bad idea but since this is his only car and he's only doing basic upgrades spending more money to keep it still auto doesn;t seem like the smart thing to do...so with that said... wait intill you can do the 5 speed swap and then mod it.. you're be way more happy

looks pretty cool. the whole thing with the tranny...is really ur choice. if u like it being auto...people say level 10 has some nice trannies for dsm's. if u wanna do the 5-speed swap that'd be cool also. when that time comes i'm sure ull know by then what u wanna do with it.

Don't listen to the others, they don't understand what you can do with that tranny. Just buy end clutches (cheap) a shift kit (cheap) and upgraded torque convertor (not cheap) and it will do fine. Jump on the Auto DSM board and see for yourself. There are plenty of fast times and big HP #'s on Autos with just these upgrades and they last.

Im going to have to agree with you i have a auto gs-t and that thing is pretty fast and has lasted for 150,000 mile and its holding up strong. As long as you take care of it it will last you for a long time.

IPT end clutch kit = $79, Translab shift kit = $79, Torque converter = between $850-$1,150

Not that much. My girlfriend had an auto eclipse, now its converted and I dont think she would want anything different. This is more of a preference than anything. I wouldnt run out and do either one until you really know what you want.

I had all thatexcept the torque converter and a 100shot on the motor and the motor blew anfter nine full bottles and nothing happend to the tranny it was in excellent contions. Those trannies are champs man just keep the trannie but if you want the feel of a five speed then do the conversion.

ehh.. not to extatic for making this car a 5spd. although, i do have a prob w/the intercooler fitting cuz of the hardlines for the trany cooler in the front... looks like i'll need to relocate =(
If you fellow automatic guys have upgraded to the greddy big FMIC... do u guys have trouble with the bumper cover??
The automatics have a tranny cooler in front of the radiator which makes the big greddy FMIC stick out a whole lot more and makes fitment a BIATCH... So here's my $0.02 to help the rest of u.
Problem:
http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr/wOTMxMDI2NnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D.jpg
-There are extra hardlines in the automatics that run across the condensor that make the Greddy FMIC sit further out.
Solution:
http://we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr?i=wOTMxMDI4NnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D
-Take it out and relocate it with another tranny fluid cooler
http://we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr?i=wOTMxMDI5NnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D
-trace back the hardlines and u will see that they are connected to these two rubber lines. These hardlines are easily unbolted and so is the cooler, u don't have to disconnect the hardlines off the cooler.
Disconnect the hardlines from the rubber hoses.
Now you will have nothing in the way of ur big greddy FMIC and it can be easily installed with the provided brackets...
http://we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr?i=wOTMxMDI3NnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D
-pretty
Then extend the rubber hoses with adapters and extra hose to the new tranny fluid cooler
http://we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr?i=wOTMxMDMwNnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D
http://we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr?i=wOTMxMDMxNnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D
-You can see them connected here.
http://we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr?i=wOTMxMDMyNnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D
-then zip tie it up to ur greddy FMIC
http://we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr?i=wOTMxMDM0NnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D
-ANother view.
http://we-todd-did-racing.com/wetoddimage.wtdr?i=wOTMxMDM5NnM0MTNkZmQzMXk1NDE%3D
-It will be a little bit angled but will still get sufficient air through the bumper vents :D
And that's what I did... Just a little help :o
