I know that if you want to turbo the KA it requires some engine strengthening. I was just wondering what exactly this entiailed and what the consequences were.

just like everything, it all depends on your plans. the stock rods are known to hold up to 500hp without being bent into an "s". the weekness of a ka are the ringlands. if anything, get some forged pistons. the ringlands will hold for a while depending on the shape of your engine. other than that, its just like any other engine. you'll need a turbo manifold, a turbo, oil lines, tap the oil pan for the return line, buy an adapter for the oil pressure sending unit for the send line (which will inevitably leak), i/c, piping, bov, sr20 injectors, something to tune fuel (afc, emanage, etc.), walbro 255 fuel pump, 300zx maf, and wastegate (if not internally gated). i'm sure i'm forgetting something, but that is the basics. many people wanting to run low boost use a stock 1g dsm sidemount i/c with success. its cheap and does the job for low boost applications. also, many people use a 1g dsm bov. again, it gets the job done but at a fraction of the price of an aftermarket bov. try ka-t.org.

oh yeah, and your stock clutch is useless after about 10 miles of running on a turbo ka. you should also upgrade your ignition system. at least get some spark plugs that fit your application. and you'll beed to retard your stock timing and start running higher octane gas. you may also look into an msd btm. it retards your timing automaticly according to boost pressure. that way, when you're at idle and not boosting, you don't have the lag of retarded timing to get you off the line. but as your boost builds, it retards your timing and keeps you safe.

Consequences? Your bank account is penalized.

damn thanks alot guys. sounds like just getting an sr would be far easier (on work and my bank account).

Bank account just depends on each individual and what they can do and who they know. $2800 got me the following:

91 cams
forged pistons
720cc injectors
t04e
spearco fmic
hks wastegate
blitz boost controller
homemade i/c piping
electromotive tec3 (pure luck on that find)
walboro 255
RSR full 3" exhaust

I ran stock headgasket, stock headstuds on this motor @ 15psi with no problems whatsoever every day all day. Ultimately it was the headgasket that failed, but that wasn't until I hit 20psi about 6 times in a row. So for me, I spent a little more money (roughly $400) but I also got a motor that put out more power than a stock SR. 258/245 @ 5psi.

Some people can do KA-Ts for cheap ... and some people can source SR20DETs for cheap. It's how well hooked up and resourceful you are.

people will argue, but you could build a ka-t running 5-8psi or so for cheaper than swapping in an sr. here's an estimated price list of the basics that could get you running low boost safely.

turbo:

1. you could use a stock sr20 t25 for low boost and could easily get one for $100, spend another $80 on a rebuild kit and have a good condition, fast spooling turbo. it would be choking in high rpm if you cranked the boost much, but it would work and would spool very quickly. i helped install my friends t25 on his ka-t and he's hitting boost just above idle. or you could use a blacktop t28. a little bigger, but still fast spool. but they are more expensive.

2. get a remanufactured t3, t3/t4, etc. there are companies that reman. turbos that you can trust, and some that you can't. you'll have to research this. my brother is building a sohc ka-t and he's going to be using a t3 super 60 .63 a/r. these will probably run between $400 and $600.

3. buy a badass brand new turbo. $800+++

i/c: 1g dsm sidemount. $25-50. if you're only running 5psi, an i/c isn't even really necessary.

manifold: theres a few companies out there that make them. i know for the sohc, you can get a top mount manifold for $250.

oil lines: inlucing tapping the pan, getting a bung welded in, the lines, and adapter for the oil pressure sending unit, probably about $150-$200.

bov: 1g dsm bov. $25.

injectors: sr20 purple tops. $75.

safc: $100-$175

i/c piping: you can use the stock cold pipe from an sr20 (modified a little to fit) and get a hot pipe made for pretty cheap. $100

fuel pump: walbro, $100.

so that puts you at about $1k. a lot of that can be had for much cheaper if you have friends or really watch for good deals. my friend got his t25 for $10, bought the rebuild kit for $80, did the work and now it works perfectly. thats just one example. for 5-8psi, you don't even need to open the engine. your pistons and headgasket will most likely be just fine, unless they are already in bad shape. just like with anything, without tuning it to keep it from detonating, you will blow your engine. but with that fuel system setup and some minor tuning, you will be more than safe.

so far ive been lucky enough to get lots of awesome deals and havent spent too much cash on mine. like al said it depends on if you can get the hook up on certain things.

Florida represent! I am not the biggest fan of KA-Ts but I will say ExoniX's was one of the budget turbo KA success stories. Kudos.
