Yeah, I'm gonna get laughted at, I can hear it now.

Has anyone ever rebuilt a caliper for a 240sx , I have a question. I put mine back together last night but I'm not sure I did it right. Does the rubber boot (dust boot) go on before or after the piston goes on. If it goes on after, how do you make it fit?

i can't answer your question, but i can highly suggest getting an FSM!!! especially if you're doing this kind of stuff. good luck.

its a pain in the ass. it doesnt really matter which part goes on first. when i did mine i put the boot on the piston then connected it to the caliper. took me awhile but finally managed it.

thanks man, thats what I ended up doing, just didn't want it to "stop working" on the road because of a bad install. As it is, I am sitting at home waiting for someone to show up to help me bleed the breaks, don't know who's gonna show up, but I'm waiting.

BTW: Q45 brakes fit like a charm! :thumb:

Boots won't make your brakes fail, some calipers don't even come with em. I'm glad you are thorough, tho.

If you search on Google, you might even find John Yim's walkthrough of a 300ZX brake caliper rebuild.

thanx guys, got the brakes on, they seem to work, pedal feels spongy, thought it wouldn't feel so spongy with q45 calipers. Has anyone used a q45 mater cylinder on a 240?

you just need to bleed your brakes a little more

bleed breaks some more, not quite as spongy ... think the MC is going out, have pedal drop if I hold on the brakes for extended amount of time, not all the way to the floor, but it falls some. Not loosing fluid though.

With the car off...

Pump the pedal until it stiffens
Press an hold it, if the pedal moves towards the floor more than what it was when you held it; then you have a master cylinder problem. Fluid is leaking past the piston seals, and back into the resivoir.

You could rebuild that as well, or just save some time and get a new one

GOOD LUCK

kinda the conclusion I was coming to ... Just didn't understand how it wasn't loosing fluid, thanx. Guess I'll keep my eye open for a new MC

what happens is that you drive using only 30% of the pedal travel most of the time.. this happens for months/years.

THEN you go to bleeding the brakes and you push the pedal to the floor.. that shoves the piston farther into the master cylinder than it's been going for a long time. it's possible there are sediments and corrosion on the inside of the MC and you scored/scratched a seal inside the MC when you bled them.

I've seen it happen a zillion times...

But just in case, go over all of your connections and fittings again on the brake lines and make sure they aren't leaking.
hose everything down with water and let it dry, then go for a short drive or just start the engine and stomp on the brake pedal to build up lots of brake pressure..
then pull the wheels off again and look for any signs of leakage.

Yeah, I did the hose down and check again thing, no leaking of the fluids, bet the MC is just gonna die soon. :bawling:

Does anyone know if the j30 MC and brake booster will work on a 240, or the q45 mc and brake boost, I know the 300z does, but what about the 300z brake booster. (break pedal getting hard to push, bet the booster is goining out.

whatever you get, make sure you upgrade for the same price. Look for a 15/16 MC or a 17/16. Freshalloy will have more thorough info on where to buy these master cylinders for cheap.

q45 mc will work, not sure about the booster.
