Well - I might get a type r and pondering on just going N/A cause it'd probably be easier.. but I thought I'd ask...
How well would a turbo kit hold up in the cold... i know turbo set ups like the cold.. but im talking in the winter months it can possibly get as low at -50 outside.... Would I be totally fucked if it got that cold? :-/
Should I just stick to N/A and call it a day?

I think a turbo would do way better in that type of weather then tht ITB all motor setup you were telling me about.
Fuck that, the colder the better.

ya.. i think the colder the better.. thats why they have a fmic.. to cool the air down. cuz with nitrous sprayer in front of the front mount, i know it gets the air to below freezing.

If you run a boosted car up there, your boost won't need to be set up high because the air will be so dense. Thats why when it freezes down here, you have to re-adjust you boost controller, if not, you will run more boost then what you had it set at when it was warm. But ya, I say go for it, and get that AWD powa and tear through that snow.
P.S. I see you put Type-R, why a type-R if I may ask? Then people are going to come on here saying why even turbo a type-R in the first place.

buy a truck and save your money till you get stationed somewhere you can drive your car, or keep it put up over the winter and roll a beater

You realize alaska isnt that bad? Roads are drive and nice in the summer time... winter isnt too bad.. i mean no street racing but still beyond driveable

i am aware. i have a friend who spent most of his life in alaska. he tells me most of the southern parts just get muddy....not much snow. and its not for all the times the roads are good, you want a daily that will be good for any prevailing conditions. i again personally think you would find a better use for a wrx or sti for that matter. if need be man...keep thinking about it and keep saving them pennies.

You don't realize how not bad it is.. lol.. My neon lowered with a lip kit and bfg geforce tires made it around.... now with studs I do fine.
I'll have some rims w/ studs for the winter on the ourrrrrrr

THe cold is actually an advantage for turbo's, turst me i've seen my share of wrx's get an amazing extra boost everytime the temp drops. I think i read sumwhere that for every 10 degrees the temp drops u gain a certain amount of hp.

yeah y turbo a type R c5, would in it be better if u just turboed ur single cam neon, reliably like a bolt on kit with piggy back on 5lb........just my 02.$ :-/

Make sure you let whatever you get warm up fully.. I love cold weather, my car boosts an extra 2-3 lbs just because its cold. Good feeling.

i wouldn't recommend doing anything drastic to the car, because you're going to have to retune for the summer and winter because of the HUGE temperature differences. in fact, you'll probably have to retune 3-4 times a year to compensate. you're also going to need some kind of block heater, and if your turbo isn't well insulated, you can freeze the impeller blades to the housing, and when you start it up, major breakage. i'd keep the car close to stock, no matter what you get

The response I was looking for... something more along the lines of this..
I know turbos perform better in cold weather.. but hows about -56.. hehe.
Yea I got a block heater on the Neon right now.. simple stuff...
So how do factory turbo cars manage to run fine out here? (not trying to be a smart ass - just asking)..
If I was to turbo it.. I wasnt looking for 10 + lbs.. just something simple.. 6-8 #s..

big difference from aftermarket turbo setups and OEM's. OEMs have nice long filter tubes with big restrictive intake boxes and filters. aftermarkets have hi-flow filters with a couple inces of tube, at best. OEM's also have heat shields (which also block out cold), small turbos, etc. i've never built a car to handle temps that low, so i couldn't really say exactly what needs to be done, but i'm sure there's some stuff i'm leaving out.

So it'd be dangerous to run a small turbo setup with like 7#s eh?...I need to find out what needs to be done to run one .. ;)
