View Full Version : Is The CRX Coming Back?

"While Honda thinks about reintroducing one of its most glorious models, we can't help but blurt out our full support, - this is a no-brainer, guys.
The CRX was brilliant when Honda developed it almost 20 years ago, and the tearaway combination of light and potent hasn't lost its appeal. Honda is believed to be seriously considering developing a two-seat sports car with those qualities, using its new Global Small Platform. The car, which Honda insiders are already calling the CRX, could appear in late 2004 or early 2005.
For the Japanese market, the CRX will exist in two forms: an entry-level model with a 1.0-litre DOHC VTEC triple producing appoximately 74 kW (the engine derived from the block used in Honda's Insight hybrid coupé), and a hardcore 1.6-litre DOHC four cylinder engine (also with VTEC) generating 110-115 kW. Not incredible, until you realise that the target weight for the four-cylinder coupé is said to cut under 800 kg. Put it this way - that's 200 kg less than the Mini and 175 kg lighter than an MR2.
This gives the 1.6-litre variant a tidy 7.27 kg/kW ratio in the worst case. By comparison, a 225 kW VXII SS Commodore has a kilogram-to-kilowatt ratio of 7.52. So, if Honda builds it, the little CRX will stand-out quick. Transmissions proposed are a five-speed manual for the 1.0-litre three cylinder, and a six-speed manual for the 1.6-litre. Use of Honda's CVT is said to be under study, but is not yet an official part of the programme.
The new two-seater is small, and information from Honda indicates a wheelbase in the 2250 to 2350 mm range, overall length of less than 3650 mm, width of 1690 mm and height below 1270 mm. This makes it a strictly a two-pew affair."

If the CRX makes a comeback, I think it'll be good for Honda to bring back this classic model!

It would be tite...i like the design
But that article has been around for several years. The closest thing you'll find is an Insight.
I think that is what that pic is anyways...a combination of the Insight with lights that look like RSX lights

Me and my boy Dom have had that discusion before, and if that is the case then that sucks! Insights are gay as Fawk! what was Honda thinking?:hit: They have really been pissing me off lately, with there new crappy Sohc Vtec that produces 117 horsepower and has very little after market support and their gay Insight that runs on electricity, how can you make it faster? buy Energizers, or Duracel batteried, I mean come on, are they trying to reduce their sales or something!:hit:
Actually insight pretty cool, if i were looking for a commuter car it would be it. As for making it fast, it is fully capable of engine swaps i wouldn't count on passing emissions with any chance though but money always passes emissions.

reintroducing a "performance" type CRX would completely destroy the market for the ep3 Si.
and yeah, im pretty damn sure the crx is the insight.
insight is ultimate commuter car, its not meant for performance, its meant for 50mpg.
but yes....l33t is correct, engine swaps are the best bet for making it fast....but doesnt that kinda go against the purpose of an insight?
while were on the subject though, me and some friends have discussed engine swaps for insights before.....comptech supercharged NSX motor would fkn own in an insight.
or a turbo B16b......

The insight chasis is not made to handle that kind of power.. You will see it fall apart as you apply more power to it.

That is a very good point. The insight would look better if the back tires didnt have those gay covers, and put some rims on em! If you successfully performed a swap on one, it would be the ultimate sleeper. There is a GI running around Killeen TX, FT Hood with a B16 powered GEO Metro. It may be ugly but it owns!:snow:

If they keep it under 2300 lbs and faster than the current SI, it'll be the only FWD car I'd consider getting.
But then again, I already have my 88 Si.

yeah for real, especially if they make it look like the insight without the horrible covers over the back wheels and if they put a k-series in it. that thing'll sell like crazy.

I agree, the Insight took over the body plan. I say they keep that RSX look to it, and give it the K20A i-VTEC!
What I would really enjoy is if there was a shitload of aftermarket parts for it after it comes out! That'll be fun!
I just hope they don't make a hybrid version like every onther car the manufacture is!

they don't even need to put the k20a (220hp jdm version), the basic 160hp k20a3 will do just fine, and i would be the first in line for that damn thing!

Nobody knows for sure yet if its coming back or not. So far its a strong rumor.
Here is the article that was printed in a magazine, and also a photoshopped version of what it could look like if it ever materializes.

with the trouble Honda is having pushing the new Si here in the states do you seriously think theyre gonna introduce yet ANOTHER underpowered hatch to the market?
i think not.
sorry, but thats my honest opinion.
btw: that photochopped "CRX" is niiiice. :thumb:

that's true, but the hatchback/wagon market in general is trending upwards, and honda might consider that the SI just doesn't appeal to american buyers, and produce something that will. also, it's important to note that the civic hatchbacks, including the type R, are very popular in the rest of the world. i just hope that america doesn't get screwed over like we usually do.
if that thing has a k series engine.........it is impossible to call it underpowered if it's so incredibly light and small.....

I dont know. It's all just a rumor, meign. Nobody knows for sure. With Honda having a weak lineup lately, and the rest of the comp coming out with awesome cars(WRX STi, Dodge SRT4, Mazdaspeed Protege, Nissan 350Z)Honda has to bring the pain if it wants to have a prescence in the sport compact world.
Anyone saying "Its definitely NOT coming to the USA" is either hating, or not sure about the possibility.
I would definitely buy one, thats for sure. My wife and I already own 2nd and 3rd gen CR-X's :) bring on the 4th!

I meant that what are the chances of another person named Jesse, that also drives a CRX. Hi...my name is Jesse and I drive an 88 Si.

since the current EP is not doing so well sales-wise, i would be surprised to see Honda reintroduce the CRX or at least bring the CTR States-side.
honda's really missing out with the marketshare the Evo, WRX, SRT-4, etc. are taking. honda needs to get on the ball and start offering some high-performance compacts.

I just read that motortrend article.....if its true, the CR-X may not be too far behind!(crosses fingers)

that first CRX concept looks sweet, but seems unlikely after the complete failure of the new si's. but i think that had alot to do with the really euro styling with the huge headlights and all, and being under powered. but that new crx looks promising.....id definatley sport it:thumb:

heh honda has a concept of a new coupe Si, wouldn't su[rise me at all if that was the next car out, or some reason american people don't like hatchbacks
