While playing pool and drinking at Cue and Cushion, I couldn't help but to notice ESPN reporting that Beltran had picked the Yankees over the Stros. Is this true? Can anybody confirm this? I tried looking for anything on mlb.com and espn.com but nothing was there. Please tell me this aint so.

After meeting Boss, Beltran says he could handle Bronx

Carlos Beltran was impressed by George Steinbrenner after meeting with the Yankees owner last week, and told a newspaper in Puerto Rico that he would not be intimidated by playing in New York. The free-agent all-star center fielder who led Houston to within one win of their first World Series appearance, talked with Steinbrenner in Tampa, Fla.

"The meeting with Steinbrenner was very good," Beltran told the newspaper, Primera Hora. "He is a professional person, super-educated. I've let them know my interest."

Besides the Yankees and Astros, Beltran said the New York Mets, Detroit and Chicago Cubs have also shown interest.

when i saw it on espn they were just giving there opinion on where beltran was going. they just said that they see beltran taking the money and signing with the yankees instead of staying in houston for less money, but they will know where beltran is going before jan 8. so no beltran is not a yankee

I saw that same thing last night. Almost ruined my night when I read that. :-/

I looked on ESPN's website and didn't see anything though.

if he's that low, then I don't want him on our team. He seemed to be a more quiet guy, like he wanted to stay in Houston, but his douche bag agent, Scott Boras, wants him to go to NY. If he goes to NY, he will not be as productive, or as big of a star as he seems to think he will be. In Houston, he'd be the main focus, he'd be the guy that gets pitched around, in NY he's just another highly paid face. I hate the yankees. [/rant]

It isn't that it's cheap, its that he can easily be paid much more.

If Houston is claiming Beltran to become their franchise star then they need to at least pay him enough money to make him one. You don't do that by paying him less than the old, soon to retire stars.

I'd say give him 17m a year for 7 years with bonuses for mvp, gold gloves, playoff and allstar appearances and a suite for all texans and astros home games.

So NYY signed Wright for 21m/3years and are hoping to pay 16m to Arizona if they can aquire Johnson as well as extend his 17-20m/y contract for 3 years.

they're already WEEEEELL into the luxury tax and I really am beginning to doubt their seriousness with beltran. look at it this way, while they are bating him away from houston they are signing other players with the money they would have paid him but are just keeping him around to keep houston from giving up and signing anyone else. that works out great for scott boras because thats exactly what he wants, to sign all of his other agents FAST before beltran to ensure that houston will pay as much as he wants since there wont be anyone fucking left to sign if we miss out.

No he didn't pass, that tumor was the direct result of his steroid usage with Balco, the same fucks Bonds and Shefield used. He lost his weight and became worthless when he gave up the juice.

he used that plus other steroids; what he probably did was not give his body a rest from doing a cycle of roids and did continual use. That is primarily when probelms occur is during prolong continuous use.

If fans anywhere else in the country paid their teams as much as NYY fans did then there wouldn't be asshats like you making dumb claims like that.

When was the last time NY DIDN'T make the playoffs? Don't overlook the talent just to see the bill...

They have talent but you gotta admit that they have the highest payroll every year. And usually with that comes the talent. ol stein just pays his way. talent comes with the money, just like with beltran

AP news story posted ten mins ago... (see below)

NEW YORK - There appear to be few, if any, limits to what the Yankees can afford, the reason they can add Randy Johnson and perhaps Carlos Beltran to their firmament of stars.

Then again, money is no object when you play in a city where apartments sell for $44 million, nursery schools can command $24,000, and dinner for two at a top restaurant can cost $1,000.

New York's acquisition of Randy Johnson from Arizona, which is likely to be completed next week, will boost the Yankees' payroll to about $205 million, easily topping the major league record of $187.9 million they set in 2004.

The Yankees, with a bottomless pit of cash _ and, some would say, arrogance _ must pay a $25 million luxury tax for last season _ about $600,000 more than Tampa Bay's entire payroll.

Owner George Steinbrenner certainly doesn't mind spending as long as the World Series flag flies above his ballpark. Problem is, it hasn't since 2000. But that hasn't stopped him.

"When you accept big money from Mr. Steinbrenner," first baseman Tino Martinez said, "you have to win."

Martinez, who helped the Yankees win four World Series titles and five American League pennants from 1996-01, rejoined the team Friday as a backup to Jason Giambi. He knows how Yankees fans view last season's team, which was an inning away from sweeping Boston in the AL championship series only to become the first major league team to squander a 3-0 lead in a best-of-seven series.

"They came up short, they failed," Martinez said bluntly. "They have to win a world championship. That's what they're there for."

New York and Arizona finalized paperwork Friday for the Johnson trade and plan to submit it Monday to commissioner Bud Selig for approval. The Yankees are sending the Diamondbacks pitcher Javier Vazquez, prospects Brad Halsey and Dioner Navarro and $9 million. As part of the deal, they want a 72-hour window to discuss a contract extension for Johnson, a 41-year-old left-hander who has won five Cy Young Awards.

The Yankees' economics are far different from those of every other major league team. Their box seats near the infield will go for $90 a game next year.

Of course, that's peanuts and Cracker Jacks for the city's well-heeled baseball fans. For many New Yorkers, money really is no obstacle.

For example, this week at Zabar's, a famous West Side food emporium, there was an express line just for caviar. At Citarella, another mecca for gourmands, white truffles were going for $199 an ounce.

Fans of cabaret singer Bobby Short pay a $95 cover charge before he ever tickles the ivories or a single drink is poured at Cafe Carlyle.

Those numbers are infinitesimal when compared to Manhattan's booming real-estate prices. According to Halstead's third-quarter survey, the average sale price of a small two-bedroom apartment was $963,127 in the third quarter. The average for a large two-bedroom was $1,277,401.

Perhaps the most incredible example of all: News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch is in the process of buying a three-floor Fifth Avenue apartment from the late Laurance S. Rockefeller's estate and will pay $44 million in cash _ no mortgages allowed. That tops the record $42.25 million businessman David Martinez paid when he bought two condominium units to combine them into one at the Time Warner Center.

The Yankees had revenues of roughly $315 million in 2004, taking in about $130 million from ticket sales alone. Boston, which had the No. 2 payroll at $130 million, estimated its revenue at $220 million.

Yankees manager Joe Torre, as well as Yankees fans, know that after he plucks these stars from other teams, Steinbrenner readies himself for the new season by thinking about 162 wins, 0 losses, and postseason sweeps all the way through the World Series. Anything less is a failure.

"When you work for George Steinbrenner," Torre said, "whether you're the favorite or you're not the favorite, you're expected to win."

No matter the price.

When you get a team with too many all-stars, egos most likely end up butting heads, and you might get less production from the players.. I hope Beltran stays.
