:roflmao: ESPN is seriously worrying me with what they consider sport. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if they had chess tournaments broadcasted.

Okay Im talking from an "athletic" stand point. Are golf players athletes?

jhonda04

why wouldn't they be? they get paid millions of dollars to swing a stick and hit a ball just like any other overpaid athlete.

...seriously though do golf players EVER hit the weight room or know what a track looks like? To me anyone in the ballet or Armed Forces is more of an athlete than Tiger Woods.

Tiger woods can bench over 350 lbs. For a guy his size I'd say that is impressive. Not to mentiong he swats the ball 300+ yards. I'd like to so some random lineman hit the ball as far as him.

No way Tiger can bench over 350lbs. I mean not by himself, maybe in space or something...

Someone needs to define what a sport is. I think a sport can be a competition of skill, but to call someone an athlete is different. Like golf maybe considered a sport, but I wouldn't call a golfer an athlete.

So is a designated hitter an athlete? How about a punter or a kicker? A goalie?

Hmm good point. Man if you ask me the only real athletes are the guys in track & field competeting in decathlons or guys who do that triathalon stuff. Now thats some hardcore stuff.

You have a very skewed sense of perception when it comes to athletics.

There is a great amout of athletics involved in golf. Each player has to hit the ball and that involves skill, finess, and muscle just like a quarter back in football. They can't ride the carts they have to walk the whole distance of the 18. Playing golf can be extreamly physicaly demanding if you are out of shape just like any other sport.

I just want someone to explain why golf is the only "sport" that has a viable SENIORS league? :dunno: We're talking people way past their 50's still playing this "sport." None of the 4 major sports has this...

Wrong, there are marathon/distance runners in their 50's who can run two miles faster than you can one. There are plenty of badass distance runners past their 40's, you'd be a fool not to call them an athlete.

I agree with you but you didn't answer my question and you changed the subject. There are NO runners in their 50's that can run 2 miles faster than I can run one NONE, 0. I've played soccer for 11 years, chances are I can outrun you as well :o Also, we're discussing golf here not running. Runners in their 50's plus have very conditioned bodies and should be considered athletes but that misses my original point. Last time I checked marathon running isn't considered a major sport in this country. Just because they are badass doesn't mean the majority of the population cares.

Daniel :)

I played golf all 4 years in High School. Our team went to Regionals and State 3 years in a row. Our coach actually made us hit the track and lift weights so we can hit farther. As for other schools, I dunno. Try carrying around 13 clubs, a golf bag, and golf balls for 18 holes sometimes 36 holes straight and you'll know if it's a sport or not.

Hmm thats cool, but I think EVERY sport in high school makes you lift weights just because. I cant think of one that doesn't. But I can understand weights = better swing.

Bah saying that you have to carry around bags isnt a very compelling. So what javelin throwers have to carry their javelins.... and shot putters have to carry their shots and discusses....
