Meant to post this up earlier. What are ya'lls takes on it? I think its a rather insulting offer, but then again its only an opening offer. I think Beltran will command at least $20 million a year if you want to sign him.

HOUSTON -- The Astros have offered free agent center fielder Carlos Beltran $70 million over five years to re-sign with the team, a Houston television station reported Monday night.
KRIV-TV, citing unidentified sources, reported that the Astros have submitted a contract offer guaranteeing the switch-hitter an average annual base salary of $14 million through the 2009 season. The contract, which also includes additional bonuses for performance-based achievements, would make Beltran the second-highest player in franchise history behind four-time All-Star first baseman Jeff Bagwell.
Astros general manager Tim Purpura does not discuss or confirm offers or reported offers.
Purpura, however, has made clear his intention to attempt to re-sign Beltran, as well as free agents Roger Clemens and Jeff Kent.
"We've had a number of discussions with Scott Boras about Carlos Beltran," said Purpura. "We've had a number of discussions with Jeff Klein about Jeff Kent. We've had a number of discussions with the Hendricks [brothers, Randy and Alan] about Roger Clemens. We're also talking with (the agents for) Orlando Palmeiro and Russ Springer.
"But we're not going to comment on whether an offer has or has not been made to Carlos or any of the free agents we're talking to."
If the Astros do not re-sign or offer arbitration to Clemens, Beltran or Kent by midnight ET on Tuesday, they would lose the rights to negotiate or sign them until May 1.
Beltran's agent, Scott Boras, could not be reached for comment. Boras had previously said he was seeking a 10-year deal for his client.
Beltran told MLB.com over the weekend that he was considering his options and confirmed hearing from eight teams: the Astros, Phillies, Mariners, Yankees, Mets, Angels, Orioles and Cubs.
Beltran, 27, hit a combined .267 with 38 home runs and 104 RBIs for Kansas City and the Astros in 2004. He also stole 42 bases in 45 attempts, including 28 in as many attempts for the Astros.
Beltran made the All-Star team and turned in one of the greatest individual playoff efforts in history, hitting .435 with eight homers and 14 RBIs in 12 games to help the Astros reach the National League Championship Series. The slugger was paid $9 million for 2004, a $3 million raise over what the Royals paid him in 2003.
Bagwell, who holds several franchise records including 446 home runs and 1,510 RBIs, signed the most lucrative contract in franchise history when he inked a five-year, $85 million ($70 million plus a $15 million signing bonus) extension in 2001. Bagwell will be paid $15 million next season and $17 million in 2006.

Why Palmeiro? I guess Springer had his nights (hardly), but we can definitely find a better pinch hitter than Palmeiro.
Unless he's getting picked up for pocket change.

lol, you're kidding right? Angels are probably #1 on Beltran's list, but I still speculate that the Yankees will make a very strong run and offer for Beltran. This all depends on the outcome of the Jason Giambi situation and if the Yanks can get his contract voided. I believe the astros will make a last ditch effort of between $16-18 million a year for beltran when its all said and done.

The Angels are number 1 on HIS list, but Anaheim isn't anywhere near as interested in him or his contract hopes that Houston or Chicago or New York are.
There isn't much NY can do about Giabi's contract. If they ever tried the players association would shit down their throats so fast it wouldn't even be funny. The Yankees will already be over $200 million this season without Beltran, and a 40% salaray tax. I don't think Steinbrenner considers Beltran the icing on the cake to a championship win that is worth paying $300 million for.

Yankees: Don't need him, hitting won't get them another championship, their pitching needs improvement and that is a fact. Everybody should understand that.

Yes I know they do but they really want to play for the Astros and are more likely to take less money to play along side Pettite, Clemens (maybe), Miller, and Lidge.

They should give Beltran a good fair offer but not anything thats too much like 18 or 19 million a year. I mean shit one player isn't gonna do everything for the whole team. Just remember what happen to the Rangers when they signed Arod for 25 mil a year, they couldn't do shit be his contract fucked up the Rangers. Hopefully the Astros can sign Beltran and still have room and flexiblity to sign other players in the future.

I've never seen a Boras client take less than market value. In fact, his clients set the market value.
If someone in his stable actually takes less to come here, I will be shocked.
There are a few owners who won't even negoitiate w/ a Boras client because his demands are beyond what most consider "reasonable".

I know what he did in the post season. He just got hot at the right time. Players get streaks. But cmon he isn't gonna win every game for the Astros. Its a combination of good pitching, good hitting, and just playing team ball. Even if he is hot in the post season teams are smarter now and wont let him have a chance to hit the ball like they did this past year. All I'm saying is that he is good player but the Astros shouldn't blow all their money on just to keep him. I mean I would love to have him play for the Astros but one player doesn't make the whole team.

Dude you need to understand that the astros have never ever in the history of their franchise had a player of this caliber. He can do it all. he and him alone might be the difference between clemens resigning and retiring. He deserves 15 million a year and honestly the astros have offered it to him with the 91 million over 6 years. Id sure as hell rather spend that type of money on beltran than a-rod, or jeter os sosa. His attitude and work ethic are great. He is a great team player who has a lot of dedication to the game and achievements. I can honestly say, if the astros dont resign him the clemens will retire, the only way he will pitch is if he feels he has a chance to win a world series. Keep up with the news on astros.com and maybe you will learn a thing or too. would you rather have jose cruz jr. in center field or beltran?

espn.com said that it's down to us and the yanks. Anaheim picked up Finley, so they don't need him anymore. Hopefully Beltran WANTS to stay here, but you never know. Also on espn.com Clemens said that Beltran and Pettite will determine whether or not he comes back, and Pettite's already here, so...if we don't get Beltran we don't get Clemens. And Beltran's not worth it? What was the 'Stros record before Beltran...then after? If Beltran were to play on a winning team (unlike the Royals) he could very easily get considered for MVP. He wants alot of money, but it was said that he'd be willing to settle for 15 mil per year (which is still alot!) I don't know why the Stros won't give him a ten year deal, he's 27. Baseball is the one sport where players can play consistantly at a high level into their forties, think Barry Bonds (juice or not, steroids don't give you the perfect swing), Nolan Ryan, shit Rocket, Unit, there's a number of people. If the Astros don't get him, the organization is going to lose alot of respect, and we're not in the market to get anybody else because we're strictly focusing on him and Clemens, so there's no point to not spend the cheddar. Superman rox my sox.

The Cubs are already at 90 million next season. They aren't getting shit unless they place Sosa elsewhere.
It is down to the Yankees and Houston, and his devil agent Scott Boras has repeated that he wants 10 years / 200 million to START negotiations. NY has said no to that. Their offer will be a 5 year, 70 million one most likely. The closer it gets to the deadline for Houston the bigger their offer will get as they don't want to lose him for nothing.
I think its a load of crap the way Boras is dealing with this. Waiting until basically the very end of the off season before considering any realistic deals. Beltran said he wants to stay in Houston, so why not negotiate a deal now instead of being a bitch and forcing everyone to wait it out. Greedy fuck.

yeah i wish the cubs would make a decent effort to trade him away, shit if all else fails then they should just get rid of him, cause that nga is a big sorry baby. trade him for a minor leaguer just to get rid of his contract then make a run for beltran :p
when you have nothing but real big money clients, you can afford to deal the way he is, because demand is obviously bigger than supply.
