Confused and surprised Lightning owner

so a few of us were rolling down Westheimer last night after some dinner and we spot a Lightning. The guy gets on it just a little to let us know he's game, but none of us really bite. So we ease out from a light and see that we've got some open road, 4 lanes across. So, my friends quickly get up next to him, 3 wide at this point w/ an open lane on the far side of the road from me. As I drift over at about 45mph to try and get in on the fun, they all drop it and take off. I'm still trying to get over into the open lane so I don't want to drop it into 2nd and lose control, so I just leave it in 3rd. Slowly I pull up on everybody in the group and by about 95 or so I've taken over, despite the late start. We all slow down for a light and some traffic and the Lightning rolls his window down and the following conversation w/ me follows:

Lightning guy (w/ confused look): "WTF do you have done to that thing?!?"
Me: "haha, not much man"
Lightning guy (w/ "don't bullshit me" look): "Seriously dude, what you got done?"
Me: "just intake, dumped exhaust and boost controller"
Lightning guy: "Let's try to catch a light up ahead"
Me: "nah, I have zero tires right now so first gear doesn't exist"
Lightning guy: "I see...yeah, well these things have tons of torque so off the line is where it's best to race from"
Me: "yeah, I hear ya"

Light turns green and we go our seperate ways.

Lightning dude got fuckin' owned by all THREE of us. The other two cars were just a stock WRX and a '00 Prelude w/ exhaust, w/ good drivers though...

Nice kill for ALL of us. I'd like to see how it would have been if I had dropped a gear :D Maybe next time :ghost:

JDM is a Lightning tuner out of New York or somewhere, and Lightnings are mid 14 sec stock MAYBE low 14s if you get your hands on a fast one. get a bad driver, and you've just got wheelspin off the line and it goes nowhere, and the trucks do not have much for top end, either........

I should know, my step dad has a lightning that does about 12 flat...... 5lb lower, 2lb upper, built transmission, and high stall TqC, intake, headers, cats, exhaust, traction bars, custom tuned chip, slicks, skinnies up front. 2" drop in the rear, and some mild weight reduction....

only about 405hp:snow: but 515 ft/lbs stretching across the powerband like a tabletop:D


I'm not calling BS or anything, but you've got to be fairly quick to take one thats been modded, but if its stock, sure, your story may very well be true, hell I know focuses on the bottle that own modded lightnings no problem:thumb:

If we're going to compare quarter mile times to what he said/she said, and by how far you were behind him at the track, not to mention base off 1 run, then we mind as well stick our dick in the gravy.

If you don't see 13s in a new model (02) Lighting, I recommend taking that truck back, fast. Now I'm sure some of you guys are speaking of the older models, same generation, which do infact, see 14s, however, since everyone is blurtin out times, without model years, then I have to assume its all present tense.

I'm with sportvortech on this one, I think a lot of people have run into the 2nd gen lightnings BEFORE they were supercharged, makes a big difference.

They aren't easy to launch by no means, but if you can do it well, mid-low 14's should be what you run in 100 degree weather with 90% humidity

Does anyone here realize there is a difference between 99 and 02 Lightning models? I haven't seen one person mention a model year yet. As far as Mustang GTs, if you run a mid 14, you might want to take that shit back too. If you run a 14 flat, touch up your driving and you'll tap a 13.9.

All I keep seeing is people talkin bout how they beat this one time and that one time, and how it was this far apart, and so it must run this and that, blah blah. Shit, i've pulled a C5 on the street before, but I can sure as hell assure you I don't run low 13s. I can also assure you the driver didn't know his shifter from his ass.

Lightnings run pretty fast, depending on the driver...

Good driver:

0-60 of about 5.0-5.5 sec

1/4 mile of about 14-14.3 sec

Shitty driver:

tons of wheelspin followed by people laughing at you...

I'm not calling your race a farce, but for the others who've replied, get ur facts straight. If you're up against a Gen 2 and the guy says it's 14's in the 1/4, it's either really screwed up L or it's a clone. The Gen 1 (93-95) Lightnings ran low 15's to high 14's stock, that's the old boxy body style for those that don't have a clue.

Just some friendly facts FROM a Lightning Owner. You want the real deal on these things, check out www.nloc.net or for some local fun www.haloclub.com Just some advice tho, DO NOT go on their boards and attempt to start crap, I put those links up for your information ONLY. Seriously tho, the majority of domestic drivers don't have too much of a problem w/ imports. My main problem w/ imports is too many of them don't know facts from a hole in the ground. As I've always said, race what you wanna race. This is all for fun.

And remember this too kids, not everyone who owns a GT, Z28, Lightning, etc etc etc is into racing. So when you do the 'fly-by' keep that in mind and try not to post that you 'killed' said vehicle. For that matter, my old Dodge Charger 2.2L 'killed' many fast cars :P

Let's all just get along and hit the track for some fun :D

And yea, Rt4u does indeed talk a LOT of crap, however, has NEVER accepted any challenge from a L owner to my knowledge. He's been challenged several times to do it at the track or on the streent. I'm actually suprised to hear that he was running at the track though. Has he finally gotten his slicks cuz he was very adamant about not racing at a track w/o slicks cuz he "couldn't hook up." Was he racing or just there doing what he does best, talking?

what Brian is trying to say here is that I ran up in the mid-low 15's on my first two runs before shaving over a second and a half off about an hour later.

First night at ANY track, even just to watch racing much less to get out there and do it myself. Also only my 6th day w/ the car, and my 6th day in my first 5spd. So Brian, kiss my ass :D

He was there that night, 14.4 comes to mind, but there were a lot of guys there (him included) that I hadn't met in the past, so I might be confusing that.

We had a couple bad problems that night. Ben (rt4u2nv) had something like a radiator filler cap blow off, spewing coolant/steam all over the engine bay, I don't know the damage really, but it got towed home.

Another guy, here from Oklahoma for the meet, his was the worst. Ran a 12.5 best for the night, but on one run toward the end bumped his rev limiter while spraying, rev limiter on our trucks means the pcm shuts down, total fuel cutoff. So he couldn't GET any more lean, just air and nitrous.

Right after he left, started hearing some clanking, then the truck died, called one of the guys that left at the same time, they got it running, checked it out the next day at the BBQ, pulled the plugs, all but one was charred, one had the ceramic shattered, and #3 piston had greenish fluid in it. Turns out, #3 piston ring land broke and was boucing around for a bit (clanking) and now is no where to be found (prolly inside the cat or something by now) so he's doing a complete teardown, checking heads and all to make sure that lil piece of metal didn't destroy stuff, and hes not sure yet what he's gonna do about checking the other pistons or leaving them be. He got lucky considering what happened, but he's still stuck driving a minivan for the time being :(

He will, he's got the time, money is just holding him back. Sucks to be here from another state though, all your clothes and stuff in your truck, and your truck can't run. He was pretty damn happy with the 12.5 though :thumb:

A LOT of best times that night. And there was some ram 2500 4x4 turbodiesel there, running 13.2-13.4 all night on pure turbo mods. That thing was a beast, launching in 4-hi and blowin a cloud of smoke the entire length of the track. Hardly ANYONE there that night (temp was in the 30's at about 9pm) but of the ones there, we saw some weird things..

A few friends of mine who also own lightning's would like to give you one by enviting you to come to either Baytown or Seely's Track. I agree, the 'aerodynamics' do hurt the L on the top end, but who really races past 140? And if you do on the street, you are either insane or really really stupid.

actually some lightning owners even autocross...granted they dont do that well...but they sure do beat up on the other trucks out there.

plus if you beat some n00b in a civic you can always make fun of him cause you have a truck.

There's a pretty good number of dakotas that autocross, and do really well, just takes a hella lot of suspension tuning to do so :)

This thread isn't even about your race anymore kurt, reaver just came here, like you would do the same probably if I told you about some guys on the H-town R/T board saying that Z's are high 14-low 15 cars stock at best. Just trying to point out the same thing you just said, that just because someone beats this one truck on this one night in this exact weather on this one road with this one pothole in the left side of the center lane on this one 6 lane road with this one blue jay flying against the wind 23 feet above the ground, doesn't give them the right to make all the generalizations that have been made in this thread. :cheers:

And, trucks are never going to handle THAT well. Even the regular cab dakota's on the hotchkis suspension can't hang on autocross with a good driver in a Z or s2000 or anything else that has horribly superior handling. So why try? Do with your time what your vehicle is best for doing. Me, my truck handles like a dumptruck. I can't wait lower it, so it will handle more like a fat woman on a unicycle. But if all I do is drag it, that doesn't matter so much now does it.

I pull out with my bed filled to the top with my baseball equiptment, my books in the bed, 2 computers, a laptop, beams for a batting cage on to westhiemer.

These three imports come over immediatly and try to run me down. I get up to a light... the 300zx takes off and i just watch him go by... typical import weaving in and out of traffic. Prelude pulls up. I didnt really feel like having that cheap piece of Sh*T next to my L so i jump on it and leave his ass searching for a gear. When i get off the gas a 300zx goes flying past (alot louder than a normal 300zx). So.... I roll down the window to chat with him and see whats going on.... Just to be friendly. Prelude and wrx line up on either side... I rev.. just to let them hear it with no intention of racing... I talk to the guy in the 300zx. Asked what he had on it... he says nothing... i call him on bs... he says "nothing much" SO.... I asked if he would want to put some money on a race.... hes whines and moans like a little biatch and says "well i have no tires" hes like... how bout we race from a roll... I asked if he was too worried about getting smoked off the line..... hes like no man.... race me from a roll....... I was like why... whats the point>? Race me from a stop.... He wouldnt. SO anyways... the prelude and wrx are reving.... so i just keep talking to the guy.... i want his money!!!!! So... while im talking to him the light turns green.... the prelude and wrx squeel off.... i watch and laugh....

where do I start???

There are several things that are total BS here.

- we didn't chase the Lightning, he was pacing us

- I was in the far right lane the whole time, shifting normally, so how I took off from a light and weaved through traffic (while in my one lane) beats the shit out of me

- He left the Prelude searching for a gear?!? Left it in FRONT of him apparently.

- He rolled down his window to chat w/ me, yes, but he had a "wtf?" look on his face and said "what the HELL do you have done to that thing?". To which I said "not much". He never called BS on me, other than saying "oh come on man, what do you really have done?". To that I replied "seriously not much, just intake, dumped exhaust and boost controller." He then asked me if I wanted to catch a light up ahead and I said "it's pointless, I have no tires right now so first gear is non-existant." That was the end of the convo. Nobody ever mentioned anything about money and nobody whined like a "little biatch".

- the Prelude and the WRX certainly didn't "squeel off". They were behind traffic at the light so that wouldn't even have been possible...

- I shifted to second and punched it? Negative. I left it in first, pulled up by the Lightning and punched it to show him I had no traction in that gear, and then I immediately let off as he floored it and went on his way. After this I switched over to his lane, then over another and turned into the Starbucks on Fountain View (that's right, isn't it?) to get a drink.

- Since the Prelude and I pulled over at Starbucks, that race against the Prelude at the "next light" is just a figment of this guy's imagination.

- The Prelude's dash was taken out? ROFLMAO. Again, negative.

and last but definitely NOT least...

- The WRX started talking shit to him? Yeah, everyone knows how big of a shit talker Big Turkey (asian Wally) is.
